Rear derailleur problem!

    Hi all,
While out for a cycle the other night and going up a slight hill my back wheel locked up and I came skidding to a stop (very proud that in the middle of wondering what the hell was going on I managed to clip out and stood down). What had happened was as I was changing gear the derailleur seemed to somehow catch the wheel and get absolutely mangled!

Wheel and spokes all look fine to me and the chain seems fine, dérailleur as I said is ruined and the hanger piece is very badly bent!

Cassette is an eight speed and I'm having problem finding many eight speed derailleur options online, totally lost when it comes to replacing the derailleur hanger and generally wondering is there anything else that I should be considering. This is my first bike brake down so totally at a loss what my options are. Also wonder if I will able do all the work needed to repair the damage, I'm relatively handy (I think).

    Sorry for drawn out post
    Thanks for any help!
    Skit.

    Sorry my mistake!
Please move to cycling main forum.
    Thanks

The hanger is specific to the make and model of your bike. There is a bewildering array of options.

Either your hanger was bent or your limits were off, but it happened to me and it was a costly mistake.

Bike is a forme rapide, 3/4 months old. How did you find the right one?

    it was a costly mistake

:( was afraid that might be the case!

    Thanks

If the bike is only 3 to 4 months old this is a warranty issue. Bring it back to where you bought it and ask them to repair it.

happned to me about 4 weeks ago.

unfortunately the rear mech was a 10 speed ultegra.
My local bike shop were able to get a hanger for me and install.

rear mech cost aside the hanger cost 25.

You don't need a specific 8-sp derailleur. A 9-sp will do fine. The difference is in the shifter, not the derailleur.

    Also, http://www.derailleurhanger.com

Did the same about two years ago - hanger gave way and derailleur ended up in the spokes. Think it cost about 30 quid to sort but had to go to LBS

Same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. Derailleur sheared off and got stuck in between the spokes and bent the hanger. Managed to get it to a bike shop, so 40 euro for a sora derailleur (on 8 speed casette), re-bending of the hanger and truing of wheel. Had to get the hanger somewhere else for 15 euro

Thanks, rang the shop I bought it from and they they seem to be willing to help, wouldn't have thought of that!

Glad to see I'm not the only one its happened too!

Might upgrade to a ten speed cassette while I'm at it!

    Thanks for the replys!!

If you upgrade to a 10sp cassette then you will need to upgrade your shifter and prob chain

That's that plan out the window, thanks for that! Just want it fixed at this stage!

So I brought it back to the shop where I bought the bike and they said they would "Sort it" I mentioned that it was still under warranty and wanted the costs covered that way. After they fixed it, I was told that it was not covered as the derailleur must have been hit by something, making it my fault. I had to pay the €42 parts and they let me away with labor costs. Was more annoyed that they didn't tell me that I would be paying before they fixed it than anything really, a bit too cute for my liking. Plus the fact the bike has never fallen or taking any contact that I know of. Told the man in shop that, reply I got was "We can never say never"

I don't think they set it up right either because when going into to highest gear (Big front, small rear) it takes a few seconds to change and jumped back out once.

    So still ongoing I guess!
Thanks again for all your suggestions and help!

From memory I was in small ring. But was changing back only either way.

Same happened to me one time, when changing from big to small ring. Hanger snapped.
When I brought to LBS mechanic's first comment was "were you changing down on front derailleur?"
Had one or two similar incidents in past 6 years but managed not to mangle anything
