Second hand car advice

I am in the market for a second hand car. Currently driving a 99 206, 1.4 petrol which has served me well but is due to retire.
Lately I've been doing a fair bit of country driving. And I mean country! I've been bounced around and my 206 just hasn't been able for it at all.

So is my main option an SUV? Or are there any cars out there that will be good on country roads.

Budget is small, about 3-4k. Don't want a massive monster of a yoke either because I will still be driving it in town too. Nothing with too big an engine, I think a 1.8L would be my maximum because of running costs.

    Any ideas?

ETA - I do about 15k miles per annum and have one child but a 5 door isn't necessary as she is older so i don't need to strap her in. No buggies etc so boot doesn't need to be too big either.

when you mean bounced around, i take it you mean because of the poor roads? you could get merc e class 03/04 1.8L kompressor for your type of budget, would be totally different league comfort wise compared to what your driving now... Citroen are meant to have great suspension to the best of my knowledge...
