Going to the US for 2 months before Canada , need a return ticket to Ireland?

Hi folks , Im planning on heading to Canada next year when the visa opens up in a few weeks. Im going to head to the States beforehand for a couple of months , but initially I was thinking of just booking a one way ticket to the States and book a flight up to Canada. I was told over the weekend that its a good idea to have a return flight booked home to Ireland as a one way ticket will arouse suspicion , regardless of whether I have a flight to Canada booked.

Anyone else have experience of doing something similar ??

    Cheers
