Looks right up my street for Friday night viewing with a Pizza and a few beers :)

Impressive cast for an action thriller too!

Love it. Magic, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman. And of course Isla Fisher for eye candy. Just what I like.

Looks decent enough, a combination of three rather entertaining genre pics, Ocean's Prestigious Illusionist.

Yes was thinking Ocean Eleven meets The Illusionist anyway quite a good cast with Harrelson and Ruffalo also

    Owww, looks pretty fun.

Nice little fun date night film.

Saw this last night. An enjoyable entertainment flick. Some things were really outlandish, but guess you expect from a film based around large stage magic.

Relatively good plot, if a tiny bit predictable (but could be me and my large interest in magic). Think most people there enjoyed it, and the twists and turns that occurred.

    Solid 7/10 for me.

Pretty enjoyable film all the same. Starts off well with a tiny lull in the middle but picks up in the final act.

Quite funny in places and a decent enough cast. I just felt that it was trying to be a lot smarter than perhaps it actually was.

    Still a decent watch.

I thought it was ridiculous, but enjoyable.

Just don't question the logic or plot-holes of any of it!

Keith Barry was a consultant on this film apparently

And that's my interest gone in the film! Haha

Has anyone seen this yet? I saw it on Wednesday night, and while fairly entertaining, the ending was
completely ridiculous and made absolutely no sense, considering what happened up to that point
. It also had lots of half baked ideas - if fleshed out a bit better would have made for a much better movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭nix

Nonsensical over cgi'd piece of absolute shit..

    Avoid at all costs!

Only good thing about it is that Mélanie Laurent is in it and you get to look at her and hear her talk.. Thats it!

I thought it was a poor mans version of the Oceans series.

Saw this on Saturday, worst thing I've seen this year. There's just so much wrong with it.

    Too much CGI.
Isla Fisher is great in dumb yuppy roles. Leading lady she is not.
Hammy acting (the intro especially where they are on stage is pretty awful)
    Ridiculous story.
    Awful music.
    Fake moustache (enough said there)
    Stupid twist.

I really tried to just switch off my brain and look beyond the daft plot and enjoy it, there was some good humour in it I'll admit - but I can't think of a film I've cringed more at in the cinema.

Pity, trailer looked decent but I keep hearing it was terrible. Too much good stuff on at the moment to fit this in

While I've yet to see Now You See Me I keep seeing people calling it a crappy, CGI'd to hell Ocean's 11 without the wit, performances or sense of fun. Much fun as Ocean's 11 is, I cannot recommend the Korean film, The Thieves enough. It's better than both the Ocean's sequels and the 11 and manages to be both funny and touching where needs to. There's some great set pieces and one of the finest ensemble casts assembled in a long time.

    went to see this today.

its an alright bit of fluff. doesnt really grip ya though IMO, more flash than substance .

But enjoyable enough to pass the afternoon, kinda like a kiddie version of the usual suspects. really enjoyed some of the preformances in it too, noteably ruffolo and harleson.

    5/10.

its not the worst thing ive seen this year.

Saw it last week, if you ignore the obvious plot holes and silly twist at the end its actually an enjoyable way to pass two hours. Sure it's not going to change how you view films and your popcorn will prob repeat on you more that the film will.

Still it's trashy entertainment at its best.

    6.5/10

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,362 ✭✭✭p to the e

Have to agree with above. I went knowing that it wasn't going to be a classic but rather just some run of the mill entertainment. There's the aforementioned plot holes but I just moved on. Definitely not the worst I've seen this year although the younger Franco sibling really is as annoying as his brother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Optimalprimerib

I really enjoyed this. It gave me the first feeling of a summer blockbuster this year. Pure fun. It has its flaws and that jesse eisenberg bugs the hell out of me with his smugness but it was an enjoyable romp.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,712 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

An enjoyable enough movie - but it is hard to engage with the supposed shocks when you know what you are being shown is very likely to be a trick that will later be explained to you.

Still, an utterly inoffensive movie that won't anger you with poor script/acting/plot imo - as other big movies have this year.

Also really liked the bit at the beginning
with the card trick 7 Diamonds. I know it was set up for it to be the card you picked out yourself, but I found it very neat that the magic trick was played on the cinema audience as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

I could have done without the last twist but the scene in the
cell when Morgan Freeman realises is Ruffalo
was very good. I would imagine if you watch it a second time or really think about it might take a star off the rating but its enjoyable fluff. Worth a watch....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 774 ✭✭✭stealinhorses

Once you've seen The Prestige nothing similar can really live up to that. This had great potential, but ended up being a bit of a waste in fairness. Some good moments, but way too much focus on Mark Ruffalo's character and the final reveal was just a disaster IMO. Wouldn't watch it again.

Saw it last weekend, get's 2.5 out of 5 from me: enjoyable fluff not to be taken too seriously, some fun moments.

Saw this at the weekend and really didn't think much of it. The central plot was somewhat interesting and the opening scene set up a far more interesting film than what we got. It seemed to be a film in search of an identity, on one hand we had characters repeatedly expose magic as misdirection and tricks and on the other a plot that at times tried to put forward the idea that magic was a very real thing.

From the trailer I saw, I really hoped that the whole magicians robbing banks would be central to the blot but other than involve the FBI it really wen't nowhere and the attempts at a little social commentary just felt flat, just like the other plots did. The time spent on Mark Ruffallo's character and his blossoming romance was a waste of screen time and anyone who didn't guess the identity of our mysterious figure after about 20 minutes obviously never saw a film before in their life. Though that said, as I left the cinema I kept thinking the the frame of the figure we saw in the opening moments was a lot smaller than that of
    Ruffalo.

The ending was a mess and there's no way that
any court in the country would buy that Freeman was behind it all. He's got a dozen witnesses and a camera crew that place him well away from all the crimes as they are occurring and his car being so full of money that it literally bursts open screams set up.
Had the film treated magic with a little respect and not repeatedly tried to hoodwink the audience then this could have been something far more interesting. It would have been nice to see the magic tricks more grounded and not performance with an overabundance of rather poor looking CGI.

Taken for what it is, a big dumb blockbuster that puts looking shiny and glossy above all else and it's not the worst way to kill a few hours but anyone looking for some wit or intelligence will be disappointed. It's the cinematic equivalent to eating a large pack of skittles in one go. You know it's not good for you, they don't exactly taste very good and soon as you've swallowed them you can't taste anything but blandness.

A number of films have in recent years done the heist film in a far more entertaining manner and I'd recommend films such as the Big Swindle and the brilliant Thieves to anyone looking curious about Now You See Me.

It was a feel good movie with a silly story and an awful ending. Run of the mill but watchable and fun.

Yet another Hollywood film that does pretty well until the third act, when it becomes over-expository and the usual Hollywood nonsense comes to the fore. Between
the stupid "Oh, I guess I'll just date you and jeopardise my job in law enforcement" ending with the French one
    and the
"ZOMG! Magic, is, like TOTES FOR REEL U GUYS!" conclusion to the group's antics
, it felt like an alright film with a much better film trying to break out of the script.

A bit of light pruning to the third act would do wonders for this film. It's never going to win any serious awards, but at the same time taken at face value it's good fun and ticks over at a breezy pace, with Eisenberg and Harrelson doing the heavy lifting on the character front. Basically the Clooney Ocean's Eleven only with stage magicians.

Poor movie but the one thing that infuriated me was the use of extras. So ****ing sloppy. Note: when people are at a show / public event they do not constantly cheer and jump up and down when the on stage attraction is talking!! Awful stuff.

One of my more favourite movies, but I must be a complete idiot :P I haven't seen the prestige or other movies of that type, so maybe that's why I really enjoyed this one.

Guys, I'm just looking for confirmation on something.

In the end scene Dillon Rhodes the FBI agent meets the blonde Interpol girl. He tells her the story of his father drowning in a shabby safe and shows her a lock and says one less secret to lock away.

It then cuts to him rushing into the burning car, now I believe he rushed in to retrieve the lock which was stolen by jack wilder after their altercation, correct ? But if the car was switched with a cadaver then how was the lock in the switched car, I'm a bit miffed.

There's a lot of rip online with the scenes all messed about , you sure you didn't watch one of them ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭SherlockWatson

I don't remember that happening in the Cinema.

As far as I know they just attach the lock to a fence and carry on walking by the river, no burning car?

Really? I thought it was pretty good. I didn't even see the twist coming, although the 4 bottles of tyskie might have had something to do with that.

Fun movie, purely because of the 'magic' element (obviously).

    Sequel in the works:

That's a shame, I thought it was a nice one off film, don't see the need for a sequel at all.
