Amanda Crotty, a visually impaired Gold medalist International paralympic runner is looking for a guide runner to run alongside her in the Women's race in Rathoath next Sunday. The runner can be male or female.

Her regular guide runners are unavailable next Sunday, so she's looking for YOUR help. Even if you can't help, you may know someone who can. Amanda is willing to contribute towards the guide runners expenses.

As a very rough guide to pace: Amanda recently ran 0:28:37 for 5k in the recent Cork Co Senior XC chp, in tough and windy conditions.

If you can help, please PM me and I'll put you in contact with Amanda.

C'mon, this is a great opportunity to be of serious help to a Paralympian athlete!

[PS I'm not up to the job myself - too slow now!]

PPS While Amanda is from Youghal Co. Cork, the guide runner can be from anywhere!

Very hard to gauge if you could pace her around that with it being XC - would be too slow I'd say.

Big job to take on though, how do you determine that where they'll place their foot is not going to be much muddier/slippier/stickier than yours?

I have guided a visually impaired runner before (not available to help here unfortunately) and it's really not that hard to guide. We had tied two short shoelaces together to form a loop and we each took a side of that loop. While it's nice to be able to give a running commentary it's far from essential. Even as a novice at it I was able to give most instructions non-verbally via the string.

If you're reading this and thinking 'I couldn't do that' please think again. It's really quite straightforward to do.

A few details might lead to more volunteers

    1. What time is the race?
    2. Over what distance?
    3. Road or XC?
    4. Approximate pace desired?

Could you offer any advice on the typical pace that her guide runner should be able to run? For example, should they be sub-20 for a road race 5k? I'd expect that the guide runner should have something in reserve, and not be running hard just to keep up with her!

A few details might lead to more volunteers

    1. What time is the race? .........13:45, according to schedule
    2. Over what distance?.......... 8k
    3. Road or XC? ..........XC
    4. Approximate pace desired?
???? She ran 28:37 for a tough 5k XC, so I reckon guide should, ideally, be capable of doing below 21 for 5k on road. I don't know what Amanda would do for 5k on the road, but I'm guessing around 22 at slowest.

    You interested?

Well it's XC so I'd deem it to be a bit more difficult than being a guide runner on the road, more to contend with. Would happily do it myself I'm sub 17 for 4k on XC but I've not run for a week and I think someone who is comfortably faster than her should do it.

Though Condo if there are no other offers, I would happily step in. I think it would be better for her to have someone for whom this would only be a light jog though.

Thanks. Would have been if it was a road race. Pace would be ok but wouldnt volunteer for an XC. I dont even own a pair of spikes.

There are plenty on here who can handle that pace with XC experience though. Id say you'll find a volunteer

    Good luck.

Amanda's PB for 1500m is 5:15 so I'd say she's more sub 20 5k standard so youd want to be at least that standard to pace her

It's something I'd be interested in doing, but in this case I think I just don't have the speed. Based on that 1500m time I reckon she's a similar standard to myself and I'd hate to hold her back if she was on a good day....
