Bought a Nissan Almera 05 recently - when changing gear notice excessive movement in gear stick - could this be engine mountings / gearbox mounts ?

    Could be gear linkage.

Yes, if you look in the engine bay you should see the gearbox attached to the engine. It'll be low down and possibly partially covered by anncilerie components.
If you have someone sit in the car (engine off) and change gears repeatedly you should be able to see the gear linkage that attaches to the gearbox move around. Once you locate that get them to stop changing gears.
Have a good feel around with the linkage. You should be able to move the linkage in a front to back, left to right and up to down direction. But for each movement you should be able to see a lever being moved equally.
If you can move it at all without any of the levers being moved in any direction then you're linkage has loosed up and needs to be replaced.
Also possible the linkage running under the car is at fault but depends on the car, AFAIK the 05 almera would have the linkage I first described.
