So, I'm looking to get a Christmas present for my girlfriend's brother and my limit is €70. I was originally thinking of a Commodore 64 but they seem to be too expensive. I'm now thinking of getting one of those handheld games machines hat are loaded with old school Mega Drive games for around €30 and then spend the remaining €40 on one or two PS3 games (Amazon have some class games for €10-€20 a pop).

What handheld would be recommended. It's just really something for him to pick up and play some good old nostalgic games on. I've no idea what I should be looking for.

Ar any of these on Amazon any good?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Games+retro+console&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3AGames+retro+console

He was born in the late 70's so I thought the Atari might have been good although the Mega Drive collections look like they could be pretty sweet?

Of the items on the first page of that link and assuming he already has a ps3, I'd prob go for the megadrive ultimate collection as it leaves you more money to get a few ps3 games.

Don't waste your money on those purpose built handheld things, they're dirt. Pick up a cheap PSP, install a custom firmware, & load it up with emulators

The retro side of the present is more for the novelty factor when he opens it and there will be ps3 games to back it up. I'm trying to give that nostalgic feeling so that's why I was looking at one of those handhelds. He has a PSP already.

In that case, pick up a Megadrive & a few carts. Wouldn't cost you more, if anything, than one of those dedicated handheld things. I actually seen a boxed Atari 2600 on Adverts over the weekend for very low money, well under €40 anyway

Yeah I'm thinking that might be a good route to look at. I'm scouring adverts as we speak. He was also obsessed with FFVII so maybe a vintage boxed PS1 with FFVII, Resi Evil 1, GTA & GTA2, Tomb Raider etc could be good and then 2 PS3 games as well. Some PS1 games are a few cents (used) on Amazon.

Here you go, €35 for a boxed Atari 2600 & two carts. Ticks all the retro boxes - http://www.adverts.ie/other-consoles-games/vintage-retro-atari-2600/2328771

Rather than a Megadrive you could get him a really good console, like a Snes!

But seriously, Dreamcasts and PSones are cheap enough and the games are easy to find.
And N64 with a copy of Mario 64 would be cool as well.

That Atari looks pretty sweet!! I asked my g/f about the Snes just there but he never had one so that kind of beats the nostalgic part. Snes was my first port of call tbh. I'm going to contact the Atari seller now and check it out. I'm scouring Amazon for PS1 deals. How does this sound as an alternative:

    PSOne with:
    FFVII
    Resi Evil
    MGS
    GTA & GTA2
    Tomb Raider

    PS3 Games:
    Ico/Shadow of the colossus HD
Journey Collectors Edition Disc Version (If it's been released here yet) or Demon's Souls

if he's already got a ps3, he can play ps1 games on it anyway, so the cost of the ps1 might be better put towards more games.

Replace VII with IX, and maybe skip GTA1/2.
