Under the right hand rear wheel arch, next to the fuel pump.

LH inner wing next to the LP fuel pump, inside a plastic housing. You have to remove the multi plug and unclip the hoses then lift out the filter head and filter complete before unscrewing filter. Manual says nothing about purging the air but I'd turn ignition on for a few secs until the fuel stops gurgling before starting.

Do a search on Land Rover RAVE and download the electronic manual for yourself, check you get the right one that includes Freelander.

Ooops, differing opinions! I'm going by RAVE for post 2001 Freelanders, was it under the rear wing for the earlier engine?

The early TD4s (up to 2Axxxxxx chassis range) had the fuel filter and LP pump up in the front. After that LR changed to the L322 type LP pump and both the filter and pump was moved to the back.
