Every summer my Swedish mate and I visit a new country. This time he offered to go to Slovenia.
I know where it is and that the capital city is Ljubljana but that's it. Have you guys been there? Is it safe/cheap/nice? How are the people there?

I've seen some pictures on the web - the nature must be amazing!

I was in Slovenia in October and I couldn't recommend it highly enough! It really is a beautiful country. Ljubljana - the inner city is absolutely gorgeous. Everywhere is spotless. The countryside is amazing, densely forested, green and fertile, lovely houses, good roads. Good public transport. I took day trips to Lake Bled and Bohinj. Fabulous.

In Ljubljana, huge cafe culture, everyone I met spoke really good English. Prices were very reasonable.

+1 to the above post. Buses are better than trains or at least they were when I was there in 2002. The menus in most restaurants are in German, Italian and English so you won't have a problem eating and most staff in the main tourist centres spoke some English. I stayed in Bled for a week and went to Ljubljana twice by bus, lovely compact city and lots of bars and cafes.

Thanks! Sounds very nice. It's always better to talk to someone who's been there already. I remember the pictures of Budapest looked so nice to us on the Internet and how awful the things were when we arrived.
So, Slovenia is on our 'to-visit' list.

IMHO Slovenians are the friendliest you'll come across and all speak several languages

It is. Buses are good but also take the Bohinj railway (west of country) as it passes through valleys with no road

You'll see these racks for drying hay all over the country, they're unique to Slovenia..

Ireland could do with those yokes with the showery climate that it has.

Have to agree with all the above posts, was there last summer. I went to bled and Ljubljana for a week or so altogether. Both lovely places, and loads to do especially outdoor activities around bled, swimming, cycling, hiking, kayaking etc.. Would love to go back!:D

    Oh, I forgot to ask.
Is the Ljubljana airport far from the city? How did you get there?

Around 27 km away, and there are buses, according to http://wikitravel.org/en/Ljubljana
