Hi all, I'm wondering if you can assist. In the process of a new build and we have a kitchen diner, the ceiling over the kitchen is flat which then joins a ceiling that is vaulted. I really don't like the look of beams or ties so just wondering what is the best way around this. There was a mention of steel straps, has anyone done this before? Thanks

You need to hire an Architect. This is what they do.

Thanks for that insightful answer. I have an architect and he is to come back to me, but in the meantime was hoping that someone on here might have some views...

The trick with a vaulted ceiling is to provide a tie member down low to stop the rafters from spreading. Yeah, I've used steel rods to do this before. It's not for everyone, can look a bit too modern. A beam at ridge level will also stop the rafters from spreading.
I can't give any actual structural design/details on these due to forum rules.
