This is for the lads who have ess dogs. Have any of you trained your dogs using the dvd's from the buccleuchgundogs.com, Paul french videos as seen on you tube.

What would be a good starting point for training your first ess dog.

joe irving training spaniels book. but no substitute for getting talking to someone in the know and getting out with someone to help you along and point out your shortcomings someone to say ya might of handled that differently etc the only advice i could give is soak it all up be a sponge for info on all thing training books dvds youtube shooting uk site pigeon watch friends people on here seek people out take it all in and then when the mistakes are made it will all fall into place just play and build trust at first and the pup doesnt have to be sitting staying hunting and retrieving at 6 months old take yer time remember be patient or become one

i personaly dont start training till there bout 10/11 months old but i would have basics done be for that like sit heel and lead work done.for the first 10 months just build a bond with your dog and let it be a pup.till then.

one bit of advise dont give them to much of one thing and just have fun with your dog

Thank's for the replies lads. I was out today shooting woodcock with 2 ess and a gwp. The ess are great for the ditches and heavy cover. They put the woodcock up too. Got one over the gwp and the ess got a few as well.

Try and get your hands on a book called 'Training the rough shooters dog' by Moxon. This I found very useful first time round. I am sure that the DVDs are also very helpful but I have never watched one so couldnt recommend any.

Id say be carefull taking a pup hunting. If he gets a few flushes on rabbits he will be revved up all the time after that and you will not keep him close. Im after finding this out the hard way. My pup goin on 10mts old and i took him every 2nd day to sented ground and he got a flush or two on rabbits at about 5mts old and me not knowing any better.now hell just f**k off up the field hunting himself. Im gone back to basics of playing with him in a small area and dropping dummy/balls at my feet without him seeing them and he finds them close to me so hopefully this mite help but its hard. Never try move on in training until wat your teaching is 120%. Im probably a victim of this too now looking back over the last 3-4mts. Im a novice and this is what ive seen. The whole thing with spaniels is to have them hunting close so control is everything. As the lads said above, few books ,dvds and information from lads themselves is best. Ask as much as u can.

Agree 100% with this, hunting is a natural instinct in these breeds of dogs, I don't see why they should have to be encouraged to hunt as pups, by all means play (consrtuctively) with the dog but get him nailed down fairly well before you start encouraging the dog to hunt.
