What does being RGII actually mean?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what exactly does it mean to be registered with RGII.

I'm looking to get my heating controls upgraded in line with the SEAI recommendations in order to avail of the grant. I tendered the work through a website and I'm in the process of receiving 4 quotes.

I have three quotes so far and one of them is substantially cheaper than the other two. The cheapest quote is from a Romanian man who is on the RGII website.

So basically I'm wondering does being RGII guarantee a good level of work or is it just a tick the box exercise.

    Cheers

To get rgi'd you need to have passed a GID assessment, have insurance and pay your membership fee to rgii. There is also a yearly inspection that must be done

It does not assure quality of work, just safety of work

An installer registered with the seai will have a percentage of their jobs inspected which must be installed correctly and meet a minimum standard which can be found on the seai website

Again it doesn't assure quality of work, just that everything that should be fitted is fitted.

Any installer worth a damn will be able to give references to other jobs he has completed. This would be the best way to find out about the installer

Bear in mind the cheapest job is not always cheapest in the long run;)

RGII is the Registered Gas Installers Ireland.
If you want to work on domestic gas works in Ireland you must be registered with them no exceptions.
This allows a person to install and service gas piping and appliances i.e. cookers boilers etc.

Like all professions some are better than others. Some RGII installers come from trade backgrounds i.e plumbing, electrical etc. Others do not but do in time become excellent gas installers and are equal or better than those from a trade background or similar.
An RGII installer goes through about 20 days of training so it is vital they have previous experience in plumbing electrical or other similar trades and professions in the heating, plumbing and gas industry.

It would be in your interest to find out what back ground the RGII installer of your choice came from as you will be getting plumbing and electrical work done in your installation.

Interview your installers as honest people have nothing to hide. The cheapest quote can sometimes be the most expensive long term. But if you feel something is not right you can ask a RGII inspector to investigate work carried out by an installer. You can ask SEAI to inspect your grant installation.

Look for their registered business/trading name, RGII No, SEAI No, and past experience and check it out.

To give a proper quote on any installation they will have to call to view your house and job to finalize the quotation.
Have a list of questions ready.
Your house your the boss !!

It's a tick the box exercise.

I am an original time served (4 YEARS) Gas Service Engineer with over 30years experience, yet some poor unemployed chap or chapette can now do 9 days courtesy of F.A.S and call themselves an RGI just as i do, its a joke and we (RGI's) know it. With very little finacing these 9 day wonders can sell themselves as being the Dogs Boo5s and people get caught.

Inspections!! My God!!! didnt the RGII just send out all the answers to the questions the Inspector may possibly ask, lets get real here!!

give it a rest billy , people are tired of you and others ranting about rgi and using other peoples threads to mouth off . the op asked a question and the two who answered gave great informative answers . you gave nothing to the thread except to polish your own pedestal and insult the unemployed .

It's the fact the Romanian fella was so much cheaper than the other two quotes I was wondering if being RGII was any kind of a safety net. Of course I'd love to get the job done as cheap as possible but not at the expense of quality. All tenders from this well known website I'm using have reviews on them and people have left their phone numbers to be used as references.

Hard to make an opinion without the general job profile and costings.

What prices did you get and for what work exactly?

What's your gut feeling? Ask him for references and follow up on them.

If that does not lead to a decision, try and get a referral from somebody you know. I for one, would not pay some website for clients to quote for.

I thank you for shouting your mouth off before thinking.

Firstly, where are the tiredly rants i have posted on thi issue ??

The OP asked "does being RGII guarantee a good level of work or is it just a tick the box exercise". The truth is its just a box exercise, maybe you have another opinion?? but alas all i see from you is you bitching about it but adding no substance.

It might be worth going in to your local suppliers, I find suppliers know who the good guys are working on gas and are normaly happy to push the work their way.

    Never thought of that cheers.

The work I'm looking to get done is:
    Split heating into 2 zones
Install 7 day timer for heating
    Install timer for immersion
    Install 4 TRV's
    Boiler interlock

No gas works as such in that quote. I have in my own house Danfoss wireless pack for over 10 years and working without failure. I have installed more budget control packs for developers in the past and not as reliable. No harm to find out which are on who's quotation. In some cases the cost can almost be double.

Good idea by Gary. Best to get a good local guy if possible. If their is a little concern or not sure about working something. When their passing after the job is finished they normally sort out the quick and little things for a cup of tea.
Also at the local supplier you can enquire about the good brands of controls. So win win.
