    Hi there,
Im planning to go back to college next year as a mature student,
eventually id like to study microbiology. Iv been working in a micro lab in a pharmaceutical company for the last few years, as im not qualified im only
staging for the microbiologists but i look after all the media and have gotten a good understanding of all the different areas (bioburden, endotoxin, environmental monitering ect) but its something iv decided I want to persue, so basically im looking for info on what my options are,
Is my best option a full time 3/4 year degree in NUIG? or is there a way of getting my degree part time,?
Is there any shorter route I could take seems iv decided what sector I would like to work in,?????
any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi OP,

Have you discussed this with your employer at all? They might be willing to sponsor you for a part time course along with your duties but that might be tough going. Another option would be to do course part time. I'd think very carefully before leaving your job for a full time course as the job market is truly horrendous at the moment. It took me over a year to get the job I have now.

    Best of luck!

My plan had been to get my employer to sponsor me, because I definately wouldn't have left a full time job but im going to be laid off in the next month or 2, so thats why I want to go and get a degree.
The main thing im trying to find out is if there is a shorter route I could take than a 4 year full time degree seems iv decided what sector i want to work in, not that I want to rush things but because im nearly 30 already so dont want to spend any longer in college than I have to.
    Thanks.

If you already have a degree you might be able to do a masters.

If you have a diploma or other qualification in a relevant field you might be able to get exemptions on some subjects, possibly even skip a year or even two.

Can't be 100% certain on this ( long time ago - Maybe Maynooth ?) but I seem to recall someone with a three year degree was able to join year four of a four year degree course.
