Numb toes! What shoe covers!

Went out today for a 20k cycle. Second time I have gone for a cold day cycle and come back with numb toes!

I have heard the best way around this is shoe covers? Am I right?

    If so, what pair?

Overshoes are wonderful for bad weather. Assuming you're already wearing sensible socks, what's your price-range?

A good pair of socks and belgian booties works for me. They can wear out quick, I have thinner overshoes for the spring/summer and also a pair of waterproof thermal overshoes for the wet winter days

I was out last Sunday and it was roughly 4degrees but mild. I didn't think it was cold enough for over shoes so simply stuck duct tape over the ventilation hole on the sole of my shoes and wore a pair of padded running socks. My feet were toasty warm the whole time. (26km)

Did the same with my ventilation hole - did the job nicely.

Padded running socks, are they better insulated than just wearing 2 pairs of socks!

As for budget, not sure at all how much cold weather foot protection is supposed to cost!

in my experience two pairs of socks are too thick unless your shoes are on the large size. Running socks have padded soles which make them ideal.

I bought a couple of pairs of them in lidl/aldi (can't remember which) and they're perfect for cycling as they also have light padding along the pressure points on the top of the foot also.

I was out today and left the overshoes at home. Just wore a pair of Castelli Gregge socks. A good pair of merino wool socks will go a long way in cold weather. I have a pair of overshoes that I got from Decathlon too. They cost feck all and do the job nicely for the colder/wetter days

    Great thanks!

So any specific sock and overshoe recommendations?

I use waterproof overshoes, which I think are fine. Alternatively you could wrap them in cling film :pac:

Dont over tighten your shoes as that cuts off circulation and makes your feet feel cold.

BBB heavy duty overshoes are a must for cold / rain and two light pairs of socks with a plastic bag or cling film in between, make sure you dont under do the thermal layer on the core and full finger gloves as the extremeties will get cold first if there is not enough heat for the whole body, just my tuppence

I started out with a pair of Northwave neoprene overshoes and replaced them with the Airtunnels when a zip went. The airtunnels are less bulky but as warm as the Northwaves and aren't bright blue. Neither will keep out all the cold.

Endura neoprene overshoes in road and MTB versions, some thin spring/summer stretch ones which fell apart, Orwell (club) summer and "winter" overshoes, many pairs of cover socks.

The nice thing about the Prendas ones is that they fit well due to the medium-thickness material. They don't feel like some sort of industrial wader like the neoprene ones I had.

I wore windtex neoprene socks last weekend in the rain - no overshoes - and had nice, toasty feet and frozen fingers. My proper gloves have gone AWOL, so I was wearing Aldi gloves over Odlo undergloves, and the Aldi gloves were so useless that my hands actually warmed up a bit when I took them off and just wore the undergloves without anything over them.
