I'm going to a swim meet on saturday - 24 th and am looking to compete apart from just volunteering stuff . Any advice on maximising speed ? Am going for the laugh but want to do half decently:D .Use Speedo pace club sets for endurance and the rest .

What events are you swimming in?
What swim training do you do currently?

Not too sure on the specifics - something like 50m free and 100m free and back thrown in . IM .. not too sure either .They - the organisers havent given much detail relating to all thats happening

Training wise I try to average at least 1600m per session , mainly on free and fly . Ive been correcting stroke - fist drills , one arm extensions etc since having shoulder problems , that's generally one day . Other days include speed training and endurance -with hypoxic work .

50m free needs to be flat out. 100m free, your first 50m should be approx 1-2sec slower than your best time for your 50m free. Second part of the race go hard. You will find the last 25m hard but work hard of the turns, streamline and kick. Don't breath inside the last 5m in all strokes and finish hard. Don't glide to the wall.

IM, most important thing with the changing of stroke, is to get your legs going fast from the start. You should be approx 1sec slower on the BF leg, 1 sec on BC, 2 sec on the BS and 2sec on the FC.

    Enjoy!

As someone who just swam in my first meet in many years, I will off you the following advice (especially for short sprints).

    1) Starts and turns. Get off of the blocks and get out of the turns.

    2) Sprints are a constant state of acceleration.

Other than that ....have fun. It's a first meet, so you'll basically be getting your seed times for the next meet.
