National Transport Authority sets “significant” increases to protect service delivery

Leap Card fares increase – but are still much cheaper than cash

The National Transport Authority has today (16 November 2012) set the increases that are to be applied to cash, Leap and pre-paid ticket fares across all contracted public transport services provided by Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann and the Railway Procurement Agency (Luas).

Some of these fares increases are significant, and customers are therefore urged to use the Leap Card, as the new Leap fares will be as cheap as or cheaper than the current cash fares – and substantially cheaper than the new cash fares.

Luas Fares valid from 7th Jan 2013

The new Luas fares will come into effect on Monday 7th January 2013.

Not all Luas fares are increasing. Overall across all Luas fares there will be an average increase of 2%. However, some fares will increase by more than 2% while other fares will not increase at all. Every effort has been made to keep the increase to a minimum.

Luas does not receive any operating subvention from the State and in order to maintain this position it is necessary to increase fares at this time.

Bus Éireann Customer Information re: Fare Increase

Bus Éireann wishes to advise customers that the National Transport Authority has approved an average 6% increase in cash and prepaid tickets for city, commuter and stage carriage services from December 1, 2012

Revised rail fares from 1st December 2012

Following the determinations by the National Transport Authority on monthly and annual season ticket fares (September 2012) and single and return fares (today 16th November), Iarnród Éireann will implement the fare increases from 1st December 2012, with the exception of monthly season tickets which will be implemented from 1st January 2013.

The NTA approved the increases for Iarnród Éireann on the basis that “having considered all of the respective costs and revenues and relevant changes therein, that the determined increases are warranted in order that a sufficient level of service can continue to be provided.

The fare changes represent an appropriate balance between a contribution on the part of the operator in continuing to increase efficiency and reduce costs, and the implementation of increased fares, both being important elements that contribute towards maintaining the integrity of the network of public transport services.”

On average, single, return and season tickets for adults, children and students will increase by an average of 3% for Intercity and long-distance commuter journeys (41km and above), and by an average of 10% for DART and shorter-distance commuter journeys (40km and below). Iarnród Éireann will continue to provide a range of heavily discounted online fares through www.irishrail.ie significantly below these regulated fares, as well as student, family fare and other promotions throughout the year. Furthermore, commuters who purchase monthly or annual season tickets through their employer via the Taxsaver scheme receive tax relief of up to 52% on the cost of their season tickets.

National Transport Authority Approves Public Transport Fares Increases

Dublin Bus wishes to advise customers that the National Transport Authority has approved an increase to cash, Leap Card fares and prepaid tickets. Prepaid ticket prices and Leap Card fares will increase by an average of 7% and cash fares will increase by an average of 11%. The increase to cash and Leap Card fares will come into effect on Saturday, 1st December and the new pricing on prepaid tickets will come into effect in the New Year.
