Ok, I'm in Leaving Cert and there's this girl in my year that i really want to ask to the grad in July. We're good friends but i'm afraid that if I ask, i'll be made a laughing stock of. Any advice for me please?

P.S. If this is in the wrong place, i'll delete the thread and thank you in advance.

    Ask her!

If she's a good friend then she's not going to laugh at you or make fun of you.

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Ask! If she's a friend it'll be ok and if she laughs at you then you'll know she's not the friend you think she is and will be outta there afte the summer anyway but I reckon she'll be cool with you asking. Go on!!!!

Are we talking about July 2013 here???

If we are, why not just try to stay friends with this girl until closer the time and then ask her...it seems like a very long time before the grad to ask her and If it was me, i'd be a bit hesitant to accept a date for next july, not knowing what's going to happen between now and then.

If you really like this girl, why not ask her out on a date? who knows, by next july you might be going out and you won't have to worry about asking her to the grad.

It's not a case that i'm going to ask her first thing monday morning, it'll probably be closer to the time of the february mid-term. thank you all for the advice :)

Now, can anyone tell me how to approach asking her to the grad?
I had a few ideas, but they seem way too cheesy.

Get chatting to her some day OP and bring up the subject of the grad, then say "do you have a partner for the grad yet or is it too early to be thinking about that"

If she says no then you say you don't either and then just suggest that you could go together. Make it as casual as possible and then if she says that she is going with someone you just say "oh that's you sorted so, I suppose I will need to be thinking of who I am going to go with too I guess"

If she says it is too early to think about that then just wait a while and bring it up again closer to the time. Best of Luck.

    Ask her:
    • Simply
    • Clearly
    • In private,
    • In person.

    Absolutely
    • No Phone.
    • No Text.
    • No Email.
    • No Twitter.
    • No FB.

    My 2c.

Ask her to meet you for a coffee.

Or other 1:1 Activity where you an get the privacy to talk to her

Tell her that you would like to talk in private as you need her advice.

If she is a good friend she will want to help asking to speak in private should ensure that she does not bring a friend. If she asks what you want to talk about, be honest but light on detail, say " a party, a girl , a relationship " most girls would be curious enough to come just to see what you need help with. This will also build some anticipation.

One you are in private together ask her.

Sounds simple, it is. Practicing the words in a mirror will help with confidence and nerves. Have prepared responses for possible answers, yes, no, ask me nearer to the date, she's not going, I fancy someone else...et.

There are creative ways to ask and simple ways, without knowing you it is impossible to say what is the right way for you.

In my day I asked a longstanding friend to our mutual Debs:

Me: Sara, will you go to the Debs with me.
    Sara: No.
    .....
Sara: Why did you ask me?
Me: Because when I think about Debs night I can't imagine dancing with anyone else.
    Sara: Oh.
    .....

Three days later Sara called and asked me to the Debs. She just needed time to think.
(Or run a thorough background check with her friends, I'm not sure :-))

    Important:

If she says no, accept it gracefully and move on.
Your friendship is more important than a night out.

I don't think you would be interested in someone who would laugh at you, give this girl some credit and do yourself a favor and start been confident as in general women do like confident men, as the saying goes if you don't ask you don't get and at least you know where you stand if she says no, but don't be surprised if she says yes,let us know how you get on

Thank you Irish_Elect_Eng and Lorna for that. When would be a good time to ask?

Echo what the others said. Now is waaay too soon to ask. How about March / April? And just ask her, if you are friends you can go as friends. Good luck!!!

Yayyyy! Just my two cents, many of us went with friends to the debs and you spend most of the night in a big group anyway so it's not a big deal. The fact ye're friends means no awkward silences in the car on the way!

    Have a brilliant time! :)

Thanks Roisy. By the way, we meet up in town and get on a bus and go to the venue so it's only a couple of minutes from her house to the bus.
