I have placed granular rat poison in 4 inch suir pipes, is there a danger that a cat/dog would eat the poison

Probally not however the poison if it becomes wet will become unpalatable. It will ge wet because the bottom of the pipe will catch rain water. Better to use blocks that you can be put onto wire this keeps up off bottom of pipe and rats cannot carry away to store. This is the most effective way to keep them at bay.

There is always a possible, how long are the pipes ??
    I like about 3 feet

Try drilling a 10mm hole at each end, top & bottom then put a bar down through both holes, if on clay then right down into ground, if on hard surface just put bar at an angle & a block on top.

Makes a 1 bar gate leaving access max 2", should keep cat out

why not use traps to make sure you kill the rat rather than he dying in an atic or behind a press, rats that are poisened stumble around a yard are picked up by owls and cats etc and causing secondry poisoning hence the traps are better and cheaper.

You would need lots of traps for a heavy infestation. Also rats will avoid traps that have been recently put down. If you have rats in an attic you should put down poison and block all water sources. The rats will go outside for water after consuming poison and eventually die outside.

To be sure you should place the pipes in an area where pets have no access - specilized bait boxes(around 10 euro) can be picked up quiet cheaply nowadays and they are designed to keep bait secure, dry and only allow access to rats/mice.

Sure if you don't mind cats in the attic, but you could have an even bigger smell when one of them falls down through the cavity in the wall

Rats store food and if they die back in there crib no other rat will touch it. It also builds up immunity. If you puy out enough bait points the rats will come fot it

ive gotten 2 or 3 of these bait boxes,
    http://www.idl-home.com/subproduct/Productdescription/144/72
there are little bars in them, you buy the poison blocks with the hole thru them and slide the bars thru the blocks, they cant take them and the blocks kinda rotate on the bars, they works great, you can see the blocks been eaten away and you can replace the blocks when they are eat
I use topcat bait and find it good, its blue, looks like storm

Them again, if the cat was any good, there wouldn't be rats in the first place!

We use old USA biscuit tins - cut a two inch slit out of 2 sides.

Wedge a stick with nails in it inside, lid on and covered with a stone.

You can then drop the bait through the nails.

Works perfectly and all recycled materials :D

My ferrets would clear house on the rats
Also if you get enough ferret **** to scat around the rats won't hang around if theres ferrets about

how do you manage the ferrets once off the lead, will they come back?

The ferrets are never on a lead
Once they pick up a scent of rat or rabbit they'll follow it and kill
With rabbits they tend to drag the rat into open area to eat
So id get rat and ferret back
