The President of Uruguay Jose Mujica has been dubbed by international media as 'the poorest president in the world'.

In his latest official declaration of wealth, he says he owns just two vehicles, a small amount of property and his farmhouse. He donates 90% of his salary to charity.

Mujica became president of Uruguay after a landslide victory more than two years ago. After a half a term in power, he is now backing a bill to legalise the use of cannabis.

I can't say I'd ever heard of José Mujica before, but I think this story is fascinating. Whatever you think of his political performances, his outlook on life and contribution to charity are very admirable. It's almost impossible to imagine such a leader being in charge of government in a European country.

Ah no, I mean the €4 million I lent him:p

Uruguay that's the one that about to legalise cannabis. Fair play to him!!:pac:

I had to read that twice: I thought it meant the poorest (performing) president in the world.
Fair play to him. As already said, you wouldn't get that kind of carry on from an European President (well, maybe the declaration but not the donation...)

Bertie didn't have a car or a bank account either and from what I can recall he was too broke to even donate to charity, sure didn't he have to tap a friend in Liverpool for a few bob

To anybody who says Politicians should do this, why don't you give 90 percent of your paycheck to one of the developing or even the rare places that are desolate?:P

Our socialist president has a salary of €249,014. He also enjoys a TD's pension, a ministerial pension and a lecturer's pension.

And because he is over 70 he does not have to pay a TV licence or dog licence.

He is in an ideal position to show some leadership by living on his existing pensions and donating his quarter of a million salary to charity.

He won't even have to pay for his own funeral. At least the Fianna Failers didn't get in. Áras an Uachtaráin would have been a block of flats by now.

Twee Higgins is a man of the people isn't he? Maybe he should give 90% of his salary. Highly unlikely though, as high chief of the pseudo intellectual board he has rights to be a hypocrite. Small little creep, I often wonder why we pander to his office, Why don't we just merge the office of President and Taoiseach. Who the hell do we think we are?

Didnt their government just vote for the death penalty for gays?

Hardly a recommendation for its leader.

You do know the difference between Africa and South America - don't you?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think you may be confusing Uruguay with Uganda - although Uganda ended up not backing the death penalty, thankfully. The Uruguayan parliament is currently considering allowing same-sex marriage.

Ireland could have had a similar President in the form of Martin McGuinness.
their earlier activism (terrorist), serving time in prison before taking up political life, he also pledged to live off the average industrial wage and donate his wages to the less well off, there are a few parallels in both their lives.

"Mr McGuinness said if elected he would only draw the average wage and donate the bulk of the President's salary to the Irish people."

In theory, you'd want the most intelligent, most motivated, most skilled workers to be the one in important political positions. They'd make many times more than the average wage working other jobs.

In practice, I'm not so sure it works.
