Good Bridge or cheap DSLR

Hi
The girlfriend wants to get into photography and was thinking for Christmas I'd get her a decent camera.
My budget is around €300 for the camera as I have already bought her other stuff.
I don't think I'd get a crappy DSLR for that money but would it be worth buying a second hand one? Or am I nuts thinking a second hand one at that price be a good buy?
My other choice is a bridge camera but to be honest I know nothing about cameras and have no idea what I should be looking for in a bridge.
Any help is hugely appreciated.

You could pick up a lower-end (but first-hand) DLSR for not much over €300. If your girlfriend is looking to get into photography as a hobby, you may be better going for a DSLR now rather than a Bridge and then upgrading a few months down the line. And you could always go second-hand if you thought she wouldn't mind the fact it was pre-owned.

Thanks for the reply.
Was up in fujifilm in dundrum earlier and the rep did recommend the d3100. It was €480 though, however, I think it did come with a small accessorize bag and a 4 hour tuition lesson.
