My husbands 40th is next September and he loves to travel. We haven't been on a long haul in years and I would love to arrange a long haul holiday for say the year after. Trouble is I am not working so I cant afford a luxury holiday. We have been to a lot of places in Europe and have been to US and Oz/Nz. Any tips/reccommendations would be appreciated. He is more into culture, adventure and sight seeing than lying by a pool for two weeks. My husbands 40th is next September and he loves to travel. Sounds like Japan or China could be good destination. Expect €700 return each. Flying to the USA is about the same price despite being only half the distance away which makes Asia far better value in terms of airmile cost. India might be a consideration also but from what I have heard from my friends it can be massive culture shock to actually see people defecating in the public streets.

Yeah would like to see India but not sure if hubby that keen and as you say it would be a culture shock. He was in Japan but was 7 at the time so didnt appreciate it properly back then I guess. He has be in Thailand so that is out. Countries I had in mind were Cuba, South America, Japan China, Canada

My parents went to China in 2008 booking via Trailfinders.
It included flying to Beijing, getting tours to all the norm landmarks there, then flying to Hangzhou and then flying home from Shanghai. (Needed to get a separate train from Hangzhou to Shanghai - not too expensive)
I think the trip was over 12 days (I could be wrong) and it was 1400e pp (could be wrong again) for flights, hotels, tour guides etc.
The best thing about China compared to others is that everything there costs less....so eating outside of your hotel isn't going to break you.

Things like Visas etc add to the costs pp though.

Just a note - they called up trailfinders and spoke to an agent - any time I've used the website I've ended up disappointed.

Yeah looked at their website just to get a ballpart figure on prices no harm doing early research. Seems South America is quite dear compared to Asia. Might go in on the sly without hubby and ask. I can't think of any other good long haul travel agents in Dublin a lot seem to do the European/US package market.

Have a look at Vietnam, were flying in march dublin-Saigon via Dubai €720, accommodation food travel very cheap, it's a fantastic country to travel through and many people speak English which helps.
