Dublin-Cork options

Hey all, I always thought that the Irish Rail website only allows you to book tickets up to a month in advance. Am looking to book return tickets to Cork for one of the days between Christmas and NY. Thought I'd check out the IR website and, low and behold, I was able to make a booking even though it's in excess of 28 days. Does anyone know when this changed? Also, I'm seeing most services on Dec 28th as being sold out. That doesn't sound right, the whole train can't be booked out? The only available times don't really suit. I guess the alternative is to book with Aircoach, does anyone know if their Dublin-Cork services are on the same roomy busses they use for city-centre to airport? The thing that's always put me off the bus, especially for such a long journey, is how cramped the seating is. Any advice on options would be much appreciated.

it was mentioned on the George hook show there a while back (Barry Kenny Irish Rail spokesperson) that the window for booking was to be widened to a couple of months, and if I remember right again to 3 months but thats as long as they were planning to extend it to as beyond that folks dont really plan journeys en masse so its more hassle (should timetables get altered in the meantime) than its worth.

That's brilliant that they've done that. The amount of times I've wanted to book a ticket online and found that I'm just slightly outside the 28 day window ...it's a complete PITA.

Does the fact that tickets are sold out just mean they're sold out for the reserved seating carriage?

...this is weird, I've just checked their site again and, all of a sudden, there are no services that are sold out

aircoach.ie and gobe.ie are two other options. Coach bus, 3 hours to Cork from €9
