I have often though of this.

Everybody should be required to live some where else other that where they grew up for say a year and preferable another country.
I am not talking about travelling although there is noting wrong with that if that is you, the person could get a job in some other country or what ever.

First of all this needs to be aimed at young people who lack confidence or who have never really settled at any sort of work but would work for anybody. It would be good for the person psychologically and for society in general. It would need to be a real jump in the deep end sink or swim situation because that is what some people need to effect a change in themselves.

Before anyone says there are no job, there are tons of jobs in Manchester and London.

That's a brilliant idea. Hang on, who would pay for this year away??? Do you propose that it be made law and if so who would enforce it? What would be the fines/penalties for breaking this new law? When it fails miserably and the tax payer is left with the bill for the mess will you still think it was a great idea.

I've changed my mind, it's a sh1t idea and will never work.

i agree :D let the goverment spend all the money, raise taxs , to let young people go on a holiday for a year then come back and continue to get the social welfare
    great idea

Emigration has broadened the minds and cultural knowledge of many Irish people. I am looking at this as an option now after 25 years of working in this country. Forced emigration is the last bastion of a failed country and Government.

Its not a holiday, it wouldn't be paid for by anyone, you can get a return rynair ticket to Manchester for 28 euro.

Its aimed at the sort of person who maybe did not too well at school has no real direction in life is clinging to a weekend spent with the "lads" keeps hoping from fas courses to the dole to maybe a few hours low paid work ( sometimes not even that ) says they live in the back of behind and eventually they are 30 and have never done anything, that kind of midst and cycle needs to be broken and having to sink or swim works in a new environment works.

What would it achieve? Being well travelled doesn't change who you are.

Very well. Lets travel back in time and have you do it.
Manchesters taken ...as are most places.
But we do have Somalia and the DRC left.

Let me guess this idea came last night as you polished off your 4th bottle of red wine?

Heading off to Australia next year, most likely. Is that good enough for you?

Force people to leave the country to work?
    Really?

I have a good job, no I don't drink red wine, the idea came to me when I met someone who said out of desperation they did that 25 years ago and they think its the best thing that ever happened to them.

Conventional ways of helping people are not working.

I am not talking about conventional emigration they already have the confidence to do what they want to do.

She's talking about living and working in a different country though, not travelling. Two very different things. Living and working in a different country might not change who you are as a person but it can certainly give you confidence and broaden your horizons a bit. The challenges that go with setting yourself up in a different country can really benefit you.

As above. This is already happening, OP.

I don't really get your point. Should we encourage more emigration than what already exists?

A lot of countries do this already. It's called Military Service.

    I don't get it.

What's the difference at going to a 9-5 in Dublin, coming home watching tv and going for a few pints at the weekend than doing the same thing in London/ New York/ Sydney?

Being abroad doesn't automatically mean you will become a more rounded, confidant person.

Obviously traveling and experiencing different cultures will broaden your mind and will make you an all round better person. I think you are right OP.
However, I would like to add that I think we are lucky in a sense that there are so many people from so many countries, cultures and backgrounds living here in Ireland over the last 10 to 15 years (until 2008 at least lol)
If we Irish are willing to make friends (as they are willing to make friends with us) then I believe we will become more knowledgeable in different cultures etc.
I know it’s not the same as going abroad but we do have the advantage of mingling (and even breading) with different people from all over the world which betters the Irish race,,, in my opinion that is.
