Maternity Leave PRSI contributions

    Hi,

Hope someone can help! I've read everything I can find but I haven't found the right page yet I guess!

If I go on Maternity Leave in 2013, the relevant tax year they use to assess your PRSI contributions is 2011, right?

But in 2011, I worked for 18 weeks, Illness Benefit for 8 weeks (the job was not suited to a heavily pregnant woman!) and then on Maternity benefit for 25 weeks.

In 2010 I worked 29 weeks and the rest of the year was a full time student. I've seen a mention of Student Credits somewhere today, but I didnt know about this so didn't claim them in 2010 or 2009.

So do they include the time on Maternity Benefit and Illness Benefit when assessing my contributions?

Why do they have to make it so confusing!!??

If you are employed you must have:

At least 39 weeks PRSI paid in the 12-month period before the first day of your maternity leave
    Or

At least 39 weeks PRSI paid since first starting work and at least 39 weeks PRSI paid or credited in the relevant tax year or in the tax year immediately following the relevant tax year. For example, if you are going on maternity leave in 2012, the relevant tax year is 2010 and the year following that is 2011.
    Or

At least 26 weeks PRSI paid in the relevant tax year and at least 26 weeks PRSI paid in the tax year immediately before the relevant tax year. For example, if you are going on maternity leave in 2012, the relevant tax year is 2010 and the year before that is 2009.

The paid contributions are made when you are actually working.
The credits are made when you are not in work but claiming a SW benefit.
Are you actually working at the moment?

My first reply didn't get posted.

Thanks for the info. I'm due to start a new job in January (not currently working) but have just found out I'm pregnant. But going by that I would be eligible for maternity benefit.

If you are not currently working and paying stamps you will not be entitled to maternity benefit.

Talk to your local citizens information or ring the revenue.

Yes I know you are only entitled to maternity benefit if working, I am not currently working but due to start a job in January should it all work out. Will be entitled to maternity benefit then in 2013 based on my PRSI contributions/credits?

they should use you PRIS contribution for 2011, if you going out in 2013.

But they can go back to different years, I went on maternity leave 2 years in a row and the second time they used 2009!
