Toyota Corolla 1.3 G6

I will be starting coop next year in Galway and I'm looking into getting a car. Depending on cost, I will either rent a house in Galway and cycle (would rather not do this) or drive from home in Ennis (1 hour drive each way, I could live with this as I love driving). Would work out at 700km a week.

Tax on a 1.3/1.4 seems to be the best "value" as it jumps after that. The G6 is a six speed which would be better for motorway cruising? 9 out of the last 10 cars my parents have owned were Toyota's so I do have a bit of brand loyalty towards them (the other was a Rover 45... :o )

My friend has a 1.3 G6 who says it's very good on petrol, is this true? Even though he has a stupid scumbag exhaust, he drives like a granny so this might be the main reason.

Have any of you had one of these? Preferably stock, with very little modifications.

the six speed box doesn't really take much off the motorway cruising RPM. having had a 5 and 6 speed variant of that corolla i can say the 5 speed does 60 mph at maybe 3250 rpm whereas the 6 speed does 60mph at around 2950 rpm. not a world of difference.

almost 700km per week i'd wager would take the guts of two fill ups in a corolla like that too...

So would a diesel be more economical?
