Who would you parachute into Tipp to represent us at Cabinet?

In the next General Election the two present constituencies of Tipperary North and Tipperary South currently returning 3 TD's each will be joined to form one 5 seat constituency.

South Tipperary have not had a representative at the Cabinet Table for 50 or 60 years with the exception of a four and a half month period when C.J. Haughy was Taoiseach.

I think that Fine Gael would do well to find a person of immediate cabinet potential to represent them in the constituency.

Bye the way I have great respect for Alan Kelly and I do hope he takes a seat for Labour at the next election.

I wonder if Fiona O'Malley or Liz O'Donnell would be interested in getting back into politics through the Tipperary route. Tipperary needs a strong voice in Government.

    Any ideas?

    why?

you're just perpetuating the localism on the national stage rubbish we seem to be stuck with in this country. Why should it matter where a TD / minister / taoiseach is from, they are there deal with national issues, not local.

It's a question of the survival of small communities in rural Ireland.

Why should it matter where a TD / minister / taoiseach is from, I agree with you it should not matter, but it does matter, big time.

When we are foolish enough to let Dublin grow to such an extent that we are investigating bringing water to Dublin from the river Shannon, it's time concentrate more on developing rural communities.

Thats what councillors are for them if you want to go that route. You would need to question who would make up the stongest local government

Ignoring the large slice of parochialism in the OP, may I respectfully suggest that if the citizens of Tipperary wish to have a local representative at cabinet, then they should start electing candidates who are likely to obtain such an office, rather than the likes of Michael Lowry, Mattie McGrath and Seamus Healy.

I completely agree with your comments and this is the main reason I am looking to a parachute candidate.

If it was not for political lobbying the rail link in Clare/Galway would never have been established. It is a complete fiasco and a good example of ill advised political interference.

Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding your use of the term 'parachute candidate'.
As I understand the term it means he/she would be someone who doesn't reside in the constituency but seeks election there. And if we are talking about someone of Cabinet material who doesn't already have a seat, then I guess its someone quite high profile who has shown abilities (perhaps in another field).

But even if the people of Tipperary were mature enough to elect such a candidate (and generally the people of Ireland have a history of electing their own local gombeen shyster rather than an honest competent outsider) wouldn't the whole point of such a candidate be that s/he would be getting elected for the good of the country, not just to be another career hickpolitician representing purely the interests of the parishes that elected him.

Wouldn't the best way of doing this be to develop Cork and Galway as a counterpoint to Dublin, rather than spreading the population thinly over the countryside (and sending the bill to the big shmoke) Oh, and via the canals Dublin has been drawing Shannon water for over a century.
