Thanks for that D. :) It's a real mine of information  Doubly so given my keep me out of mischief winter project is updating all the running gear of my early 80's frameset, this will come in handy. I come from a time of *grampa Simpson voice* "I've got a 12 speed, 6 on the back 2 on the front". Actually my bike was a 14 speed. Oh yes. Take that Campagmano(give the buggers time...).

When I got a barely used pair(in box!!) of Campag SR 11 speed brake levers/shifters for nada I reckoned this would be a doddle. Eh no. Steep learning curve ahead. :o That said, being still a small boy in my head I took em apart first chance I got and I have to say the modern stuff is really easy to strip down and back up. Mad light too. Even with the internal gubbins of springs, pawls and washers, they weigh near exactly the same as a pair of my back in day lightweight dura ace brake levers, that had like one moving part. Well cool.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Dodgy... Go to the amazon link and you can view a preview. It's the same book.

It looks very detailed... I might even build a set of wheels from it.
I'm tempted to buy an old steel frame to renovate too Wibbs..

For the love of God NOBODY report the OP's post.

As long as the strict and by-the-book Mods are unaware of this thread, I don't think boards has any liability for sharing copyright material and more boardsies can take advantage of the OP's ingenuity!

You know it makes sense young padawan. :D Just take care in the one you go for D. A lot of the old steel frames, including those from "big names" were not such great quality and a fair few rush jobs can be seen, even on really high end tubesets. The vintage "steel is real" hippies/crowd rarely acknowledge this. Check for rear wheel alignment and the quality of the brazed joints. Old (80's/90's) Pinarellos are usually a good bet. Outfits like Giocc, Zullo, Cinelli, Rossin are usually well made. Raleighs made with 753 are other good ones and right bargains. The joke is because the vintage crowd(esp our American cousins) love their Italian steel, the UK 753 stuff can go for mouth wateringly cheap money. I've seen them go on ebay go for 100 odd quid, where some near junker Italian columbus job can hit 400 or way more. A nice Reynolds 753 frame is a joy to behold.

Friend of mine has a 531c (the lightweight racer reynolds tubing) 80's bob jackson with a modren campag athena groupset and mavic wheels. Bit of a bastardisation but my god it's quick. He's a strong rider and shows up a lot of carbon fiber stuff on it.

    I want a nice 531ST touring frame someday. #brokestudentwithnomoney

But yea, a lot of reynolds stuff can be had for a song. Also do not forget about tange tubing, the often forgotten tubing manufacturer who's frames can be had ultra cheap.

My hacker is a poorly resprayed Columbus Aelle, I'm always on the verge of spending stupid money spec'ing it up or rebuilding it as 'period'.

If you're gonna ride non-index, it may as well be for coolness rather than poorness :p
