Just thought I'd post this as I'm pretty new to this.
There seems to be something wrong with the server in our office.

People don't seem to be receiving their emails and in Outlook 2010, they can send emails externally and send them to each other internally in the office, but they can't receive emails from an external source, any suggestions where to start.
We have a windows 2008 console for configuring the server and running things.
Any information at all would be welcome.

Could be many things. Simplest thing to start would be to simply restart the server to see if it resolves your issue before checking if there is something else amiss.

Ok, I'll try that for starters, thanks.

are you using SMTP mail? and the MX records directly pointing to your server ? have you the correct rules setup to allow the mail through on POrt 25 if your using SMTP mail

Who is hosting your email domain? have you called them to see is all ok?

Honestly, I wouldn't know where to start looking, originally they were set up as pop 3 accounts now an external it specialist changed it, I would like to figure out were what kind of mail is setup, but i'm pretty new to this.

Where can I check who is hosting my email domain, we have an external website setup if thats what you mean.

Honestly I don't know what an ISP is thats how much I know about these things.

Get the external specialist back in and have him fix it. Sounds like this is beyond you.

Mind you, you might want to consider a better "external specialist" this time around.

To be honest I'd rather learn on the job, I think I could learn a lot of valuable information from all of you on boards. any advice would be welcome.
    thanks.

Sure, I appreciate that. However, if your workplace is being affected, maybe you should get the issue fixed quickly, then see about learning afterwards. I learned a lot on the job myself, but initially from working with more knowledgeable people.

You could contact the previous consultant and ask for details of what he changed - that's what I would do first, and take it from there.
