    Looking for €1000 sub 1.0 litre, cheap to run car for a pal. Something reliable and frugal, I'm thinking Micra but is there anything decent in this price bracket? It will be run on a shoe string so needs to be close to bombproof!

    Needs to be the 899 for the OPs requirements...!

    Which is bombproof, the engine that is :)

    Beware of rusty Seicentos, look at the battery tray for signs of corrosion

    My friend is selling his car. He was gonna wait until new year but I'm pretty sure would give it up now! It's a 03 Opel corsa... 1L I think. He's looking for €1500. Taxed until new year and passed the NCT today! Got about 55k miles on clock. Car goes by the name of Betsy. :-)

    My girlfriend will be selling her 98 Punto soon. (3 door, white)

    only 90k miles

    TAX = Feb 2013
    NCT = Jan 2013

    Would be fairly certain it'll pass NCT again as she's only done about 3,000 miles in it since last January's NCT! :D

    Only 400 euro!

    You will have to go back as far as 1992 to get a 1.0 litre Starlet, anything newer would be 1.3 litre upwards.

    Micra is probably the best option in that price range but it will be mine field as cheap to run small cars still fetch decent money irrespective of age, the ones that are really cheap are cheap for a reason.

    Suzuki Swift, Nissan Micra, Starlet.
    For all the 3cyl corsa hating, I don't think they're bad for urban driving. Any of the jap 3 above would be preferable at the same price tho. (Maybe the swift and the corsa B may have a similar engine? the 3cyl is a suzuki manufacured engine?)

    Hi,

Never let me down. very economical too I averaged 37-43mpg over 4 years. Its NCT'd till may 2013 and I'm confident it would pass again. PM me if your interested. Its in Wexford.

    Take a look at some Skoda Fabias, under rated but very well put together cars, see a few 01s for 850 on done deal.

    This too shall pass.

    I've no view on the 1l bit, hate 1litre engines, too gutless, but I always run a sh1tbox as a work car, I keep the jeep as the family car and hate wrecking it so, I buy €600 cars and run them till I'm bored/they die. Day before yesterday I bought a 01 primera for €500, nct'd, new tyres and a 1.6 - actually nice to drive, corners on rails, big boot and all electric everything including a 6 disc cd changer, sunroof and nice alloys. I threw it into the mechanics for a full service and will drive it till it dies, or someone else offers me a grand for it(actually happens a lot tbh) and go get somthing else. Why suffer a 1l titch when you can have a middle of the road saloon with a bit of comfort for feck all? I also like the fact it is totally anonymous and bland - nobody even notices it.

    What's she like on juice? What does your insurance company think of your purchase? What does the tax man want out of you?

    This too shall pass.

    Interesting option, but is that not the same lousy 1.4 lump found in the golf?

    At me? ^?? Does high 30's, I've insurance on 16 vehicles so I tell them what I want and it's taxed till december and I'll tax it when that's out, somwhere around €445 for the year? I'll tax it for 3 months in case it die/I sell it and if I went out and bought a brand new car with €160 a year tax, would I be saving money??:D:pac: Noupe.:cool:

    Most of the Fabias came with the old 1.4 MPi engine which was a modified version of the 8v engine from the old Felicia afaik.

    No it doesn't. A wheelbarrow will go for years and never let you down. If F(ix) I(t) A(gain), T(ony) started making wheelbarrows, I'd steer clear...

    OK, this is now urgent, the current car failed its NCT yesterday badly and not worth repairing. New car needed ASAP.

    The shortlist is down to:

    Matiz .9
    Micra 1.0
    Polo 1.4
    Fabia 1.4

    Can anyone seek out a good one of these? Longest NCT possible.

    fiesta 1.2 a possibility? theres a 1l 206, but I'd be wary of these

    If Ferrari In Affordable Trim started making wheelbarrows, it would never let you down and I'd have to buy nothing else
