    they don't need them.... they usually only couple to each other rather than a variety of stock

    Fair enough.

    I thought the buffers were there to provide protection from vehicles colliding.

    Buffers are essential for buck eye or chain coupled trains as it stabilizes the train from over bouncing and vibrating, especially if the trains had loose coupled wagons in it. Central couplers offer a better balance and smoothness of the train, especially at high speed.

    when buckeye couplers are used, the buffers are retracted and out of use usually in my experience (which isn't of Irish Rail admittedly...thinking BR class 33/1)

    Some 201's have this capability. Carriages and older loco's have to bare all their rusty bits to the world :D
