An interesting NCT question

Well ok, maybe not that interesting

I have a 02 car that's been off road for two years & I want to put it in motion again.

The NCT expiry date is 10/12/10

I presume if I NCT it before 10/12/12 it will have to be done again after the 10th?

If I wait until after December 10th and then do the NCT, will it be ok then for another year or two?

You can NCT a car up to three months in advance of it's due date.

So if you do it now and it passes you will get an NCT until 10/12/13

    Thread title fails btw

    +1..

All cars of 10 years or older only get a One year cert.

    Thanks,

NCT expiry date is two years ago, you spotted that though, correct?

Does it just keep rolling forward like that?

    Ta

I'd wait until the 11th december if I were you.

If it is within three months of a new test date then it will be tested in reference to the new test date.

If you were six months behind, then you'd get a cert for six months and have to redo it.

OP wants to put his car back to the road.
Why do you want him to have it parked for another month?
    No point in waiting.
If your car pass NCT, it will be valid until Dec 2013.

Thanks all for the replies, booked it in

    No I don't think so.
If it is within 3 months of the next expiry date, they will backdate the NCT - in this case the disk will be valid until 10th Dec 2012 - if the OP NCT's the car tomorrow. If they wait until December the 11th - they will get an NCT disk valid until 10th Dec 2013.

I think you guys are missing the OP's point. The NCT cert runs from the due date, not from the date of testing. The last NCT ran out on 10/12/'10 so if he gats it tested any time in the two years following that date it will run to 10/12/'12.

Obviously there is no point in getting a cert for 20 days so he's wondering should he leave the test until after the 10th because presumably they will have to give him a cert from that day forward, I think he might be right.

Now I see he has booked the test so we will have to wait and see what happens.

Spot on. Don't see him getting a cert that'll go to Dec 2013.

    You are both wrong.
NCT operates in accordance with DUE DATE.
The nearest DUE DATE for OP is 10/12/12.
Everyone is allowed to do test 3 months before DUE DATE.
So OP could do his test from 10/09/12 and still get a cert valid to 10/12/13.

Fact that NCT was not done for the whole previous period is irrelevant.

I'm pretty sure someone here did this before and only got the test valid for the remaining three months. IIRC when he queried it they told him that he should have told them that he was testing it three months early instead of nine months late when he was booking it in and wouldn't change it.

It's not like they have any choice at NCT centre
    It's the law
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2009/en/si/0567.html
    (2) A test certificate which is issued

    (a) not more than 180 days before the first test due date, or

    (b) not more than 90 days before a test due date other than the first test due date,

continues in force until the subsequent test due date

This is correct. I've done it myself.

It seems they may go on the calendar month.

I tried to book a test on a car yesterday where the current nct expires in mid Feb next, so within 3 months. I got a message on the booking page that told me I could not book a test date before 1st December for this car.

If your NCT expiry date is mid February, and it's not your first NCT, you could do your test from mid November.

If their system tells you otherwise, then their system is wrong.
    Give them a ring.

I think their system is set up as the other poster described. One of our cars is due for NCT on Jan 27th, but I couldn't book it in until November, i.e. couldn't book it for 27th October.

I'm not sure how is set up.
My NCT is due 27 November.
Last year I was trying to book it for 28 August, so I entered their website few weeks before that (mid August) and it told me my vehicle was not due inspection.
I rang them and she told me the same. I told her I was entitled to test my car 3 months in advance, and that I wanted to book it now as there's always few weeks waiting time. She eventually gave me an appointment over the phone.

This year I tried to book it online again well in advance (mid July) and system told me my vehicle was not due insupection.
But when I tried on 28th July (a month before first possible test date) system let me in, and I managed to book a test for 29th August online then.
So I thought they changed it now, and you can book your NCT a month before the first possible appointment date. But according to what people are saying here, it's not always the case.
Anyway - they can't refuse you a booking for anytime 90 days before due date (3 months in advance).

Bit strange alright. I'm not that bothered to be honest, as I've gotten a booking so it's fine.

Is it 90 days or three months in advance, as due to 28-31 day months that could make a difference?

According to NCT legislation it's 90 days.
But NCT centres operate in line with 3 months.

Obviously if they refused you a test on particular date backing it up that it's more than 3 months in advance, but it would be no more than 90 days in advance, you could go to court and win the case. But who would bother.

    Yep who'd be bothered.

I book mine early so I get it done while I still have an NCT and can get any issues resolved so I'm not driving around without an NCT
