Oh my goodness. I know parking is bad at UCD but that takes the biscuit.

    Thats bad.

The damage I'd do to someone's car if they left it that close to mine. Utterly reckless and disrespectful to others.

next time they will consider sharing a parking space with others! It is very common to see 2 cars parked in 3 spaces!

Its impossible to know who is at fault when you see 2 cars in 3 spaces, with cars moving in and out all day things are going to end up getting messy

I'm genuinely impressed with that person's parking skills though.

What's amazing is that so many students have cars - despite a significant proportion living within a very close proportion of UCD

    Why not?
I can't see any advantage from 40-50 minutes journey ( bus + walking in the rain), when I can get there in a car in 10 minutes and take everything with me (books, gym bag, lunch etc.). Public transport is also very expensive comparing to that I am spending for petrol.
Next thing is that I just love to drive my car, so I take every opportunity to do it. :p

Generally because students are supposed to be relatively poor due to the fact that they're not working full time. Running cars cost's a lot of money so in theory very few students should be able to afford to have one.

I dunno if you fully understand him. He's not saying "Why shouldn't students drive instead of taking 40 minute transport" he is asking "why shouldn't I drive if I want to / can afford to".

This was in response the previous poster who seemed to take issue with students who drove short distances to college. This comes up every now and again on boards, people moaning that locals drive to college even though they don't need to.

Tbh I'll side in with the locals here, there are lots of advantages to driving other than just keep warm, dry and having reliable transport. I live relatively locally and I drive, mostly because I carry quite a lot of sports equipment in the car, and because I am pretty busy around Dublin and I'm not just going to and from college.

It's a shame UCD doesn't have more parking, and its a shame they don't put it multistorey or something, because the car parks are an eyesore, but thats that.

Speaking as a petrol head currently unless your car pooling its vastly more expensive to drive. The break even is about 3 people to a car. Thats factoring petrol, insurance and tax.

Oh no I've no problem with people driving but don't complain about parking when they arrive.

A multi-storey would be a lot uglier than anything at present and more car parks would just be filled up just as quick.

Also speaking as someone who ran my own car for a while, there's no way that driving is cheaper than public transport if you're talking petrol, tax, insurance and servicing.

I hope they never build one. Would be an incredible eye sore and I doubt it would see any major increase in parking space. The only site suitable would be the gravel area opposite Quinn, which would once and for all run the landscape of UCD.

    Why..?

Because it's a known fact that UCD has nowhere near the amount of car parking spaces for the number of cars and that's not going to change due to planning regulations.
