Hi, we are pulling out an old oil Stanley and replacing it with a duel fuel gas/ele range. My plumber says we can use the existing buried oil feed to supply the gas and set up the canisters beside the oil tank out the back. Does this ok/safe?

Even if the pipe could be cleaned to a satisfactory state. With hot soapy water and air. No kinks, in a conduit.

You would also want to confirm pipe size. Most likely the pipe is a 10mm pipe and may not reach the requirements and needs of the cooker. Even on LPG.
Record the size of pipe the distance of the pipe and check with a cooker manual before purchase or install. Or ask the shop for more information.

Also gas cylinders will have to be a certain distance from the oil tank, drains. Best to give your local Rgii installer a call for advice and he may be interested in commissioning the cooker as well.

Absolutely not. Firstly, it will be contaminated. Secondly, you do not know if there are any concealed joints, which are not allow in gas pipe work. Thirdly, the pipe work will not be sleeved and sealed through walls as per gas regs and finally, it will most likely be under-sized for the installation (depending on distance and output of cooker).

Also I might add, separation distances between your gas cylinders and oil supply have to be observed

Whoever you have doing this work, and suggesting these options to you has not a clue what they are advising you of!

Thanks for your replies. There are existing gas lines going to a fire, but we don't know the route. The gas is located about 8m from the oil tank which will be ok. New line means pulling up the tarmac drive. Better safe than sorry! Thanks.

With regard to digging up your drive, a gas laying contractor could mole an underground supply for you.
Keep an eye out for Bord Gas service layers, you might get a nixer done on the cheap.
