I'm looking for any EN, BS, NEMA or ANSI standard which defines the mounting pattern for standard electrical socket and/or junction box.

    Any ideas?

Have you thought about going on Farnell or Radionics and looking at the mounting pattern of boxes that conform to these standards?

I can look at individual boxes but would like to know what the controlling standard is.

You could contact the NSAI & ask them, thats what they are there for.
    Publication Sales: info@standards.ie
    Databases: databases@saiglobal.com
    Tel: +353 (0)1 857 6730
    Fax: +353 (0)1 857 6729

I also find the search function on the BSI website quite good:
    http://shop.bsigroup.com/SearchResults/?q=electrical%20socket

I'd say the NSAI would be the quickest.
