There may be a chance it will not be a 72-500. Aer Arann operate 4 72-500s, REL, REP, REO and REM.

Normally that flight is operated by the Shannon Crew If I recall and there is usually EI-SLN OR SLL based in SNN which are ATR 72-212 or EI-REI REH which are 72-201s. All are very safe aircraft it thats what you mean.

They are in pretty good nick all around, they are old and in need of an upgrade sometime soon.

All the 72's they have are fine. "Small" planes, if you've only ever flown 738/A320 before like lots of people it'll be quite a bump down. But from Knock you may be used to Be's Q400s which are very similar. They're comparatively noisy if you've only ever flown on jets, but again that's relative and they're in no way intolerably noisy.

My only problem with them is the headrests are too low... which isn't really high on the complaints list.

Sundays flight was operated by EI-REH,previous to that EI-REM and EI-SLL were the main 2 aircraft operating the Knock route. Ive been in nearly all the 42s and 72s at this stage,my favourite been EI-BYO. Great machines,a lovely noise when starting up/taxiing.

You will be perfectly safe. The aircraft are closer to the ground with a short but relatively steep set of steps into the cabin. If you are worried about access for elderly passengers then have a word with OCS at the airport. They will provide assistance with boarding.
