Telescope?

Yet another which Telescope should I buy thread. I have read the stickies and there is a lot to take in. I am interested in buying an introductory telescope but I am keen to not buy one too cheap as it might put me off but conversely I don't fancy taking out a mortgage either!

Would anyone have any opinions? I am based in a rural part of the country with little of no light pollution and I'd be pushing a max budget of around 300-350. Is it even worth buying for so low?

My recommendation would be get the biggest aperture for your budget.

An 8" dobsonian comes in around about your budget, and will keep you happy for a good while with visual work.




If you fancy astrophotography at all, you are better off saving for longer and getting the right gear at the beginning. A mount is about €1000, then whatever scope you want on it after that.

You can get a perfectly acceptable setup for 300-350, I suggest you shop around on some sites to see which ones fall into your budget. That astromaster you linked seems very expensive from that site for what you get €239.99 + €69.99 for a Motor Drive

Just careful here, I own that telescope and the Motor only is for RA axis and there is no goto.

it seems to get good reviews so I might start of with it!

Yep, those skyliners are pretty good. F6 so you'll get decent enough planetary or dso views and won't have to use stellar (pardon the pun) eyepieces like you would on a fast dob. Conversely it's longer and won't go as wide as, say an f5. 8 inch dob is definitely a good choice in a rural location.
