If you are on a budget, this set should be OK. And actually, check previous threads about lights, there are good few of them popped up recently.

    I alternate between these two:

Bike Ray IV and Lezyne Super Drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭Seweryn

    I alternate between these two:
The BikeRay IV is not designed for road use, if that is what we are discussing here ;).

It's bloody great on unlit rural roads even on the low setting!

Good thing I have the Lezyme also! ;)

The bike ray is a lovely little unit. Quite bright. I had a go of a friends one and the flashing mode is ideal for city cycling. Other modes are really only necessary for rural cycling.

I've a modified patholing headlamp that I can mount on the front rack. Good spill and flood on high setting

    Another cateye bargain...

    http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=12044&categoryID=105

It's the EL600rc at £40, good wide spread and fair battery life.

For that money you can buy it in a set together with the excellent Shield 60 (see the link in my earlier post).

I bought a 1200 Lumen cree light from ebay a couple of weeks ago.
Cost 25 euro incl delivery came with charger, battery pack, head strap and bike mount.
Three settings high, Low and flashing.
    Delivery took 2 weeks.
    Very happy with purchase.

How are you finding this light? I ordered one in October and am still waiting  although I'm starting to feel like a child at Christmas :o

I got a MagicShine 900 lumen last week:

Tried it out with the Skerries/SwordsCC winter training group last night, perfect for the unlit roads.

As others will tell you - you can get it far cheaper from sites like DX but I've heard of 1-2 months delivery times.

Yes that was super bright last night! And you only had it set to 50%?!?

Edit: Is there a Skerries CC that I am unaware of?!?!

Stuck it on 100% as soon as we headed up Ardgillan, light up the road for you guys to follow ;).

The Skerries arm of Swords CC... although I remember there was talk a couple months back about Beasty setting up one, even had our own jersey I think?

I've an 800 lumen lamp that I use on road. Just angle the beam and it's fine on road

So good, it lit the way for 3 of us. Even got a few flashes from passing cars due to its excessive brightness.

Haven't used it in the dark yet hopefully will over the weekend.
Looks very good when shone out in the back garden although I live in a lit up area.
The flashing light is crazy bright if you look directly at it.

I bought it for the unlit road out to work but haven't getten the time to get out on those roads yet.
It looks exactly like the magicshine light discussed in this post.
If poeple like I can put up a link for it.

mtbbatteries.co.uk make a decent light. 1000 lumens on full power, 2hrs. Generally use 50% setting and it's perfect for off road and doesn't seem to upset drivers as I cycle to and from wood.
    V2 xml is light I bought. £89
    Very happy with it

I have a magicshine MJ-808E, which is a very bright light.

I would caution though about using a light like this (1000 Lumen) in built up areas where you have the benefit of street lights. Lights like these are really designed for off-road use or on rural, un-lit roads.

Im looking at getting the Cateye Nano Shot Plus.
Its nice and compact and 600 lumens.

    http://www.cyclesportsuk.co.uk/product_info.php?currency=EUR&products_id=12199

Local shop can do it for €115 (€130 elsewhere).

I bought 2 bikehut super bright LEDs last week and they aren't as bad as I was expecting tbh. I commute at 7am on unlit roads and while they are OK I was going to buy a Magicshine for the dark evenings. Instead I ordered a knock off from ebay with the wide angle lense but it hasn't arrived yet.

Its not from this seller ive deleted the mails from when I bought it but it's the same spec and accessories as this.
There is a post in the bargain alerts forum about these lights as well with other recommendations.

Got recommended this bad boy after a nice (but dim) night ride this evening.

Looks the business and the price isn't off the wall for what you get.

    I've got this one
    http://www.bumm.de/produkte/dynamo-scheinwerfer/lumotec-iq-fly.html

strapped to a front dynamo. If you need to cycle every day in the pitch dark it's absolutely worth it - constant brightness and you never need to worry about batteries. That said, you'll need to add a hub dynamo and get your wheel rebuilt.

I'm surprised at how expensive some of these lights are. Is there really any need to be paying out so much??!?

I use one bike for commuting and another for training/sportives etc I have a bracket on each bike (spare bracket was €3) and switch the light easily as required.

The light cost less than €20 (I paid about €17.50) for the money it's incredibly bright

    http://tiny.cc/sl0mqw

I've even had a motorist complain that it was so bright it was distracting :)
