Bank cards in Hong Kong SAR

    Hi there,

I'll be studying in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology next year and I am wondering how I can manage my bank account from Hong Kong. I currently have a Laser Maestro card with my bank and I do plan on using my card to obtain money while I am out there, but my question is will my Laser Maestro card actually work out in Hong Kong with the ATMs? I know lasers generally are renowned for not working in a lot of countries, so I just want to make sure it will work when I go out there, or will I have to get a new card?

I have questioned my bank on this they've failed to give me a definitive answer. Many thanks in advance!

I was in Hong Kong for a week two years ago and my AIB Laser Maestro worked in most ATMs. However, the amount of money I could take out each day was extremely limited (I can't remember exactly how much, maybe about €60 worth or thereabouts). If you are planning on paying a large-ish sum of money at once (like your rent for example), you may want to make other arrangements.

Thank you very much for your advice, I'll definitely take that into account.
