Just thought I'd share a good insurance shopping story. Got my renewal quote in from Aviva for €669....decided to shop around (as I always do every year)
So I'm 29 looking for fully comprehensive with full no claims protection on a 2011 180bhp Skoda Fabia RS
    • Quoteme.ie (Aviva Broker Motorchoice Standard) - €374.61
    • Aoninsure - €432.87
    • Chill.ie (Aviva Broker Motor Choice) - €447.18
    • pibainsure.ie - €560.52
    • FBD - €590.77
    • Nononsense - €638.82
    • 123.ie - €731.95
    • AXA - €1744.01
    • Zurich - Wouldn't quote me via internet
    • Liberty Insurance - Wouldn't quote me via internet

So I decided to ring the two cheapest and play them off each other, they both dropped a few quid...then Chill rang me and dropped below them...a few more phone calls and the lowest quote I got was €333!
Not bad with full no claims protection and they even allow you to drive other cars fully comprehensively now (rather than 3rd party)
Definitely pays to shop around! :D

Did you go with chill in the end? what company?

edit: chill seem quite expensive for me, on a 3 litre petrol it's 800 fully comp, 123 is ~530

Yes I went with Chill underwritten by Aviva. It's funny as my renewal was with Aviva with less benefits and over double the price.

Every person will be different but I always found AXA the cheapest for me. Got my renewal of €880 this year on a 2012 Golf, shopped around, chill.ie quoted me €570, rang axa back and they instantly dropped it to €550 with full NCB protection, depreciation cover, and fully comprehensive open driving cover. Couldn't argue with that.

after reading this thread, i got an online quote with chill as my renewal is due early Dec. Just got off the phone with them and am so pleased that I took 5 mins to check out boards.ie as I have saved €250 on my car insurance

What about no nonsense? they are quite competitive, still a bit more than 123.ie for me...

Never thought of them....just got a quote there and it's €638.82 by the time I add in all the optional extras that the Aviva policy has as standard.
It also doesn't appear to give me any way to get a quote with a partner named on the policy :confused::confused:

I found 123.ie cheapest for me. Well done op, good days work for you.

One word of warning for everyone. I noticed this last year when shopping around. Look at what you are getting. Many insurers are not putting fire brigade charges, lock replacements (after key theft), breakdown assist etc on the policies. Many have really stripped them back to the bare cover.

Also if you opt for the bonus protection enquire as to how many claims it covers in a year. Some are only one claim others are unlimited.

I found that you need to be very careful that the quote covers the usual additions - NCB cover; windscreen; driving other cars; breakdown; etc...

As for nononsense - I found their cover to be the biggest nonsense! Fully comp (not THAT cheap) - no driving other vehicles, no windscreen, breakdown - barely TPFT+.

Is it worth paying for protected bonus? Or just having step back?

Not really sure...I can imagine if I made a claim my renewal would go up the next year either way
    http://www.aviva.ie/online/driving/car-insurance/options/
    Step-back no claims discount
What this means is that in the event of a single claim or one arises during any period of insurance, you may keep part of your no-claims discount. We will step it back or reduce your no-claims discount as follows:
    • 50% to 20%
    • 40% to 10%

Protected no claims discount with Step-back
This allows you to make up to two unlimited claims in a three-year period without losing your no-claims discount. We will not take account of claims for windscreen breakage or fire or theft for the purpose of this cover. For subsequent claims, step-back no claims discount applies. To be eligible for a protected no claims discount you must have a 50% no claims discount

Suppose I claim during the policy year...as my no claims is protected, when I would be shopping around next year, do I say that I have had no claims? Or does the protection only apply with the current insurer?

Only current, zero to everyone else

Even if they put it up slightly for a made up reason it would no way be as high as not having protection.
