I think I'd rather pay the extra €25 for the Seagate drive than one made by a company I've never heard of.

    tis a seagate drive inside.

I'd generally steer clear of seagate myself, bad experiences, especially with that size a drive

Can these externals be taken apart to remove the HDD? Are they normal desktop HDDs inside? Apologies if that's a dumb question.

Yes, they're just normal HDD's on the inside.

You need to get two, one as a backup of the other.

Seagate are doing a promotion at the moment, same price for that drive in Argos :D

I got one of these in Argos last year on the cusp of the flooding in Thailand, you have to break it to get to the hard drive which I installed in my HTPC, around a year later and it's 100% rock solid so far guys. Think I paid around the €150 mark.

Max USB powered 2.5 drive is a 2TB at the moment. Desktop 3.5 drivers are at 3 and 4TB. They are also faster than a 2.5 laptop drive. Other than a raptor. So compare like with like.

Bought one of those Few moths ago, very solid a quiet. Paid around 160 in Harvey Norman in Cork

If anyone just wanted this for the internal drive, you can get them cheaper elsewhere http://www2.hardwareversand.de/7200+RPM/53880/Seagate+Barracuda+7200+3000GB%2C+SATA+6Gb+s.article

and you wouldn't void any warranties by breaking an enclosure

normally there is a shipping charge from HWVS but it looks like since it would just be a single item you can get this 3TB harddrive only for 129,14 € Shipped!

Argos are offering a €10 voucher for purchases over €100 at present so that brings the Argos price down to a net €132.99.....rather deal with Argos given the choice

You get the voucher after the purchase, so you can only use that voucher for subsequent purchases.

How do you get the Voucher?

Spend over €50+ in Argos and they will give you a €5 voucher, spend €100+ and you get one for €10

Picked one up in Dabs.ie off a Bargain Alert here in April and so far so good. As the Hitachi Touro Pro it's 7200 rpm, quiet and negligible heat. Get c.1.2 Gb/s - plenty for me but less than 25% of the theoretical USB3.0 max (I am using an ExpressCard controller on a 3 year old laptop though).

Aesthetically, sleek it ain't - a chunky 6cm thick (self standing at least). Some say the finish is too plasticky and removing/exchanging drives will almost certainly involve a damaged casing as the post-Thailand drive salvaging YouTube videos show. The only slight drawback for me is the lack of a power switch. There's a fairly simple backup software option and a similar 3GB free cloud storage supplied - a useful stash but no Wuala for sure.

Don't see it readily for sale and from the reviews the ordinary Touro (5400 rpm) replacing it - that definitely appears to be an inferior model.

I got the Groupon 3tb hard drive in Nov 12 and installed it to my satellite box on 12.12.12, it recorded everything fine then two nights ago it blew up literally, a gang, a smell of burning and the trip switch went in the house and now I have a scorch mark over that socket which an electrician is in now replacing. Groupon normally are great at refunding items, The company Askdirect.co.uk dont want to know and told me to go straight to Seagate direct. Just waiting to see what happens.

If you took the hard drive from it's original case and installed it in another kit (which I do also from time to time) then Seagate will tell you go whistle I'd say!

One thing I noted about the Seagate drive is the cooling, and ventilation design seems quite poor, without an active fan the only ventilation is going to be vertical convection heating. There doesn't seem to be much vents on the case and none on the top. Also a 7200 drive is going to be hotter than a slower drive. So I would think carefully on how you are going to use it. Is it going to be on a lot, or just for short burst. On the WD Book drives the ventilation is top and bottom of the case. Which seems a better design. otherwise considering using an old tower computer as a NAS with some fans on the drives.

Ultimately if you have data you don't want to lose keep a backup of it. Then a drive going down is less an issue.
