I had two Mk1 1.6 Primeras and liked them, maybe a little thirsty. I've heard from a commercial traveller that the newer shape 1.6s are underpowered.

That model Primera wasn't a particularly good car. Didn't drive as well as the first generation and not exactly reliable either. They eat window regulators and gearboxes have been known to be weak on them too. They were pretty much coming to the end of their run by 2006 and outclased by most of the opposition.

A Ford Mondeo or Mazda 6 of similar vintage can be bought for similar money and both are light years ahead of the Primera.

there was a thread about a week back about a guy looking to sell his 2005 1.6L Primera... or at least he was looking to change to something more efficient at the time...

Bought one new in 2005 (1.6L) and at the time it was streets ahead of the Mondeo due to accessories etc.
In the 6 years I had it (about 110k miles on the clock) I had one issue..wheel bearing which cost me about €180 to replace (something to with the hub and bearing being all one unit).
Now it was a bit heavy on petrol as it's a heavy car and the 1.6 is a bit underpowered at 115hp (0-100km in 11 secs) but
    a) not one engine problem with it in the entire 6 years
    b) very comfortable

Thanks guys for reply s looking at primeras on done deal they are very reasonably priced like 4 k for 06 tested the lot, seems to have a lot of extras and all that, not too gone on the shape but we would get over that not too bothered about power wise as is family car , now to off load this focus on some poor ****er.

2005 1.4 petrol,160,000 km first the cat went, than power steering hose, they were the big things, than a few small thing like petrol lid falling off all common faults on the ford focus , all in the last 6 months hopefully it might stop there, nice car to drive and fairly alright on juice.

any 1.6 petrol is thirsty some are more thirsty than others , its the gearbox thing i am worried about anyway of knowing that the gearbox is dodgy or do they just go suddenly.

Both of those cars would be my choice too. Shouldn't be much, if any, difference in price to the Primera.

Always thought that model Primera was ugly and the interior, just weird.

All previous shape primeras were great fine handling cars...

That shape is a laguna in an ugly dress, and it actually handles worse than one.
