Just wondering what are people's thoughts on ceiling heights. I'm building a 2500sq ft house with fairly large living areas. I wanted to have 8' ceilings but have been told by a few people that for large rooms I'd want to go with 9'. Thanks for any replies.

Looks nice in a big area 9' . More space to heat/ paint /tile but not that much though

    9 ft all the way
But consider first floor construction type / depth and ceiling cover for Mvhr

Even 8'6" makes a big difference in a big room.

Agreed, Ours are 8'8" and it really is a huge difference over standard height.

Thanks for replies. Will prob give it at least another 6 inches. I must also allow 200mm above ceiling and under 1st floor slab for hrv duct and wanted to keep height of house as low as possible.

200mm seems alot for mvhr most systems Ive looked at only require 150mm max and there is one company which only requires 100mm with an oval shaped duct of 60mm and radius bend with 80mm overall.

8' 6" think its a good height without drawing too much attention.

I've been involved in two similar 2500 sq ft houses with large open plan areas, one has 8ft, the other 9ft.
The one with the 9ft ceiling looks and feels much better.

Planning received a few years ago. Ready to go to engineer to get construction drawings and hoping to start building in the spring.

That may slightly limit what you can do with regard to ceiling heights. Not that the floor to ceiling height is a planning issue as such, but, if you have planning already, you cannot simply make the structure higher to accommodate a higher floor to ceiling height.

It may be possible to increase your floor to ceiling height within the structure/heights granted permission. Let your engineer investigae.

I've allowed for 9' and 8" above ceiling on planning but was thinking of reducing to 8' to cut costs. I think now I will leave at 9' and maybe have a look at smaller ducts for mhrv.

You're assuming that HRV pipes need to run horizontally downstairs.
In our case we dropped the pipes for downstairs through upstairs wardrobes etc. directly from the attic. Only 1 room has HRV piping running horizontally so we dropped the ceiling in that room only.

With a 9ft ceiling, what height are the doors and did you increase the heights on the windows ? I'm worried that the drop from a 9ft (2700) ceiling to a 6ft 8" door may be a little much. We're thinking a 7ft (2100) may look better but I'd like to get others opinions that may have done the work already. I know there is probably extra costs due to large doors but wondering if its worth the expense ? Anyone have any finished pictures available ?

I'll bump this thread again to see if anyone might have some pics available.
