My nephews Fat PS3 turns on with green light for about 3 sec, gives 3 beeps and then turns off.

Is there a common solution to this or am I looking at an electronic problem. Its a 40GB if that helps. I also took it apart and cleaned it out thinking dust might be the problem and over heating. Could the fan be broke?

Any detailed help would be great I'm new to gaming systems.

    Thanks

The soldering on the CPU has failed, you'll need to get it reballed or reflowed, cost about e100.-
Some people have had success using a hairdryer on youtube, but haven't done it myself

Thanks for that, I'm going to try and reflow. I have to get thermal paste on wednesday and i'll try then. I'll post the results.

Reflowing is a temporary solution at best and not advisable. You're just wasting your time and money. Best to get it done by a professional reballer. They'll replace all the solder with much better quality solder and the PS3 won't be on the blinker again within 3 months.

I Hope Steloide doesn't mind me jumping in here, but mine has the exact same problem.
Beeps thrice and shuts down. I've heard it do this a couple of times while the kids were playing it but they just turn it back on, wait for the system file rebuild progress bar to finish, and play away again. Yesterday it happened twice in the space of an hour so it's getting worse.

Strange thing is, about two months ago my son was putting something on Netflix and it said an update was required (he thinks) but it restarted after the update and every scrap of user data was gone from it. Game saves, photos, music, movies etc. I put a 320GB drive into it shortly after I got it about 4 years ago. Would I be lucky enough that it's just the hard drive that's failed now? Or are all these symptoms typical YLOD cases that will need a reball?

Any recommendations on where around Dublin to get a reball done and probable cost?

Being honest, it owes me nothing at this stage and given that it's already wiped itself clean it probably makes more sense to just replace it at this stage. Agree?

No bothers Milltown, and thanks retr0gamer.

I'll give the reflow a go as the nephew doesn't have €100 to get it reballed. If it works for a while.... happy days! If it goes again I might even try and reball myself.

This has happened to be also. Have the original PS3 and it has served me well. In two minds whether to get it fixed or buy a new one.

You need specialised equipment do that do, as you really do for reflowing too. Those DIY methods cause more harm than good & in a lot of cases, actually make the PS3 unrepairable should you ever decide to have it done properly

sounds like YLOD lads... i've had it almost 5 years so so it owes me nothing but I got it reballed recently in Dublin and its working fine, guy who did it for me has guaranteed it for a year..

Gamestop done a deal(they might still do it) . Where they offer a big discount if you trade in your broken ps3 for a refurb. Traded in my ylod fat ps3 and got a slip refurb on the cheap. Worth checking do they still do it. The YLOD problem is only going to resurface, getting a new system is a great piece of mind

    FWIW I went with Consolepros.ie

Spoke to the guy on the phone for a bit and he certainly talks the talk at least. Had been looking at 50-75 euro for a reflow with a max of 6 months warranty. E100 for a reball with a 1 year warranty including courier collection and delivery seemed a good deal to me. Hopefully will have it back early next week.

The one year warranty & a proper reball is the only repair I'd bother with PS3 wise, & only then if it was a launch model or if it had loads of data on it that you didn't want to lose. Anything else isn't really worth it, & the console should be replaced

Not a launch model but I don't have the spare readies to replace it with a new one at the moment but couldn't justify 50 to 75 lids on what seems to be universally accepted as a much more temporary repair than the reball.

Well in that case, you made the right call having it reballed. If you are going to repair it, your better taking the option which is considered as near as permanent one can get. The one year warranty is pretty sweet too, its a far better repair than Sony do with the refurbs, & the warranty is longer than Sony offer too.
