Windows backup question

Hey, is it normal for windows backup to write the entire drive every time it does a backup? I have a 400GB hdd, and a 700GB backup, so I can only have one backup at a time and it takes half a day to run. Does the windows backup have the ability to just write my changes to the drive or do I have to go third party for that?

    Thanks!
