    Hi
I am looking for info/opinion about studying Sociology in UCD.
    1. What are the differences between Social Science and Sociology trough Arts degree?
    2. Is it better for further carrier to do the Joint Honours degree (Arts) or the Single one?
    3. Finally, what do the courses look like (workload, work experience, job opportunities - anything)?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Just to contextualise, I have a bachelor of arts and Master in sociology. Sociology is a social science, think you could be mixing it up with social policy? Social policy and sociology would be a common joint major in a social science degree. The first I know little about, except that it is perhaps more practical.

Sociology is rather abstract, and the practical aspects of it come in the form of research methods, typically described as quantitative or qualitative, (The former being statistical number crunching, the latter being interview, case study techniques). As far as employment goes I can only give you anecdotal information. I know a few who completed social science, and the social work masters, who have been very successful in getting a job. As far as the sociology masters crew, most of us are struggling to find something relevant, while others have jumped ship to pursue other pathways!

As far as undergrad I think sociology is great, although bare in my mind I am partisan! As with most subjects in an Arts degree, you will most likely want to pursue further studies after, I'm sorry if I'v gone off topic and not answered your questions here, I suppose I can answer them all with: 'it depends', depends on you and what you want to do after, I don't think there is any 'best' combination.

PS whether through an arts degree or social science degree, there is only one set of sociology classes. "The Sociology Crew" as I call it.
