Hi. I am thinking of getting a 07 or 08 BMW 530d m sport with manual gears... can anyone tell me what sort of mpg's they do. Im not a hard pilot with most of my driving is about 60 miles per day..to and from work...I cover about 300 to 500 per week..depending...
How many miles will they do to a full tank of diesel? ?
Thanks in advance for opinion s...

I have an 08 520D and i would struggle to get that mileage. I do drive it on but even with mixed driving and mainly country driving it struggles to do 30-32mph (i think)

The 530d's are known to be as easy, or even easier on diesel than the 520's due to the size of the engine, it is completely unstressed while tipping along, whilst the 520d has to work a bit to get the 1.6-1.8 tonne car along. especially the manual 530d's. before the dpf came in in 2005 they can achieve 51mpg on average.

another kick in the teeth to 520 owners is that the 08's and new are the same to tax.

Nobody can deny the 6 pot is a better choice as it does not suffer from the timing chain problem that the n47 520d engine does.

30-32MPG? Something serisouly wrong there. I can manage better than that in a 2.0T Petrol. You should be getting high 40's easy.

I have doubt's in common rail diesel's. They are always advertised as doing 50-55mpg. This is when they're new. With average maintenance and depending the type of driving done that often becomes 40-45 mpg after about 5 years. Which is the same mpg you got(and still get) from pre-common rail diesels diesels in the late 90's.

I had an 08 520d and found it gutless...but i did manage to get on average 650 to 700 miles per tank..and the trip computer returned 51.3mpg to me...so it was good on juice.

Anyone know what miles a full tank will do on a 530d?

Nope the fact that common rails are far more precise about how the diesel is measured and injected and the pressure it's injected at makes them more efficient. copouled with vgt turbo's and the fact that CR's have an inlet metering valve means that the calculation of mpg is more accurate than the old TDI's, I know it's hard to get you head around a 3.0 doing 50+ mpg, but of you drive one you will see why. The auto box gulps about 10 mpg off both the 530 and 520.

I have a 530d, auto. Get between 30-35 mpg on my weekly commuting etc if driving conservatively. On a long motorway journey would get upwards of 40, all depends on how you drive it. As a previous poster said, if you just idle around the place you will get really good mileage but to be honest they have so much power that its too tempting to let them on a bit. As for the fuel tank , ive never filled it right up and drained it but halfway gets me over 300 miles so I would say you wud get betwen 7-800 on a full tank.

Yea you see yours has a DPF along with the auto gearbox, both take about 15mpg away from the manual pre dpf 530d.

Unless you absolutely can't stand automatics I would advise you to rethink your choice of gearbox. Especially when - as you say yourself - you're not a hard pilot.
I drive a 5 series for 8 years now and automatic rules.

I did Dingle - Drogheda in 2007 (before a lot of motorway was built) and averaged 6.2 L/100km in a 530d (one of the first LCI models with the steptronic box). Wasn't going mad, but wasn't holding back either, so I'd say that would be achievable if you are commuting on decent roads.
