Time between signing off and first paycheck

I'm going to be signing off the dole this week as I start my job on Monday (happy days!). Only thing I'm worried about now is how I'm gonna keep myself going for money for that month while I wait for my first paycheck. I have a bit saved up as I've been really scrounging for the 6 months I've been on the dole, but I don't know how I'm going to pay the rent :( Usual story for many people signing off, I'd say.

Anyway my question is, is there any kind of support in place for this situation? A friend "knew a friend" who just didn't sign off and then the money came out of their first paycheck - but that sounds real sketchy to me! Anybody got experience on the situation? Thanks!

Well while you *can* technically do it, it's considered fraud if you're working while on the dole without notifying them. So obviously it's not a good idea if you do it. I have no idea what would happen, TBH.
Your options are basically: go down to the local Community Welfare Officer and explain (they might help you out), get a loan from a friend or explain the situation to the people in the job and they might be willing to give you a small advance.

maybe just talk to your landlord and tell them the situation and ask if you can pay the arrears when you get your first paycheck. if they say no, just tell them you can't pay until then. evicting someone is a big hassle and since you have a job now, they will probably consider you to be a reliable tenant they want to keep. and just try and stretch that last dole check for food/transport if you can. You can try and ask for an advance from the employer but the whole reason you get paid monthly is they don't want to pay someone to do the paperwork more than once per month. Also, you might not feel comfortable saying to your employer 'I'm short of money', which is understandable.

conversely, if you do get overpaid (ie: are still collecting the dole until you get paid). tell them about it as soon as you get paid and tell them you want to pay it back. while it is not advisable, as technically it is against the rules, tbh they are not going to try and do you for fraud in an instance like this, esp. considering you have just gotten a job, and have told them to stop your payment and are totally willing to pay back the overpayment, which is a relatively small amount. just explain the situation. I mean, you're going to be off the live register, that's good news for you and them. The money you can either pay it back in one go or set up a direct debit to pay it back. i had a similar situation before when I had a new job that was paid monthly at the end of the month and I not only had to pay rent I had to relocate and pay a sec. deposit, etc. It's a different situation to claiming the dole and working for a long period of time. I wouldn't say you'll have much joy with the community welfare officer, they'll just go by the book and say you have to sign off immediately and that as you are ineligible for the dole you can't get paid by them either.
