Compulsory Purchase Orders (Leixlip-Dublin and Shannon-Limerick)

    Im just wondering how these particular roads still have side entrances to estates, peoples homes etc when the NDP specifically mentioned CPOs to build Motorways and Junctions and to buy the people out.

    Does anyone have any history on why they still have them? Very dangerous IMO having a gaff that leads right out onto an (almost) Motorway spec road

    In the case of Lucan an 'interceptor' lane was built to separate the local and through traffic around the Spa Hote. I suspect that it is due to space considerations. The Limerick Shannon road is 1970s spec dualler btw. Entrances west of Shannon were closed 10 years back.

    In short some of the roads are not new builds and there's an attempt being made to remove as many of these entrances as possible from the roads, such as the retrofits that Sponge Bob mentioned on the Lucan bypass.

    The N7 still has a fair few single entrances, the N3 has a few before the Clonee junction - these won't be removed though as there's no reasonable alternative and they were (likely) built before the rules changed.

    The only way that these can go is if the property is bought, which councils are loathe to do as it's often characterised as eviction - especially if the owner doesn't want to leave.

    A lot of the N4 where there are entrances is where it is an overlay on the existing road. There are none between the Spa Hotel and Woodies because this was offline, but between Woodies and the Deadmans Inn is online as is between the Spa and the M4 starting.

    Is there any thoughts on whether the roads themselves would ever be realligned to complete the motorway network. From safety points of view, this is a no brainer. Obviously would be costly.

    At least all those lethal right turns across the Dual Carriageway on the Shannon road and more recently The Downs outside Mullingar have been eliminated with the grade seperation programmes. Are there any more such DCs with the grades not seperated left in Ireland?

    I doubt the N7 between Dublin and Naas will ever become motorway simply due to so many private and commercial entrances on it. Saying that, I don't see it as a big deal as being able to drive at only 100kph over a choice of 3 lanes is preferable to a congested 2 lanes each way motorway where you can in theory drive up to 120kph but often not possible due to congestion.

    Very unlikely. Make more sense to just buy properties with access as they come on sale in normal circumstances over time.

    What about the Middleton Cork road? Has there been any work to take entrances off that?

    N7 between Dublin and Naas has no viable alternate route so can't be motorway, sadly. The original plan was for the unbuilt M50 junction 8 to hook up to Naas, but that was scrapped for the Ryder cup and the current road built upgraded instead (manically without Newlands too!).

    Midleton to Carrigtwohill has had most of the median crossings closed (especially the quarry one where a truck crossing would actually block the overtaking lane westbound while it waited for an eastbound gap in the traffic). One or two are still there but are only for one or two houses.

    Would be great if they could sort out Shannon Limerick... Anyone know how many properties, land would need to be purchased?

    This is the worst section with 10 houses whose driveways lead directly onto the mainline and a pub. I've seen a car reverse out of one of these driveways as traffic passed at 100kmph.

    There are 3 other houses that I can think of on the Southbound lane and around 5 on the Northbound lane. Plus multiple T junctions and farm entrances.

    Fu-ck em. These are national roads. Nothing to do with the locals who Im sure were duly compensated back in time. National interest (70,000+ cars use this per day) trumps a few local hicks. Nothing to do with local councils either (its the N4 for a reason. They can worry about the R roads that need work.

    I suspect they'll remain furious, as its the NRAs road to refuse to allow access to, which at least they realise:

    "To pursue and facilitate the reopening of Tandy’s Lane and
    Esker Lane exits onto the N4 in an acceptable, safe and
    efficient layout subject to funding and approval from the
    National Roads Authority."

    This is the worst section

    Wow, I didn’t realise something like that existed – following along the road only reveals more horror shows. I assumed that was coming into the city but there is no excuse for a situation like that that far out. The problem could be fairly easily sorted also with very little CPOing. Most of the propertys seem to have a R/L road which can provide alternative access, the T junctions need to be closed and there seems no reason for most of them to exist in the first place, a few over bridges are needed and some junctions upgrade to full grade separation. Im sure, with a bit of work, they could extend the motorway a few kms closer to Limerick.

    As far as I'm aware that whole section was dualled years ago by plopping a second carriageway close to the first. The whole lot would have to be bypassed and there are far more needy schemes out there. Its bad, but not as bad as it looks from Google.

    There is a project to do this but its been put on the long finger since Amgen didn't build that factory between Carrigtowhill and Midleton.


    It would have involved straightening some sections of the road, complete grade separation of junction and the building of 2 roads running alongside the dual carriageway for local and housing access.

    Will probably go ahead eventually. Would be nice to do 120kph all the way to Midleton.
