Bent QR skewer....cause??

    Hi,

Just bought my first bike during the summer, so still an bit of a newbie!

But was out on the bike today and had the pleasure of getting my first puncture! Was going pretty fast on a bumpy section of road when it went....and when I popped the wheel off, I noticed that the skewer on the rear wheel was slightly bent out of shape! It's still straight enough to slide in and out of the hub without getting jammed, just a bit worried it might cause further damage to the wheel or something, and am wondering what would cause it to bend? It really is only a little bend so couldn't get a picture where you could see it clearly.

I did take some pics of the dropouts though, as I am wondering if they could be the cause, it looks like they may not be level because of the way the rear dérailleur sits on to it! Is there any good way to check if they are perfectly level?? I have attached the pics there to show what I mean (the derailleur looks like it raises up the height of the dropout on one side! And I know the fixing screw is missing from the derailleur, just hadn't put it back in! )

It's only a new bike (Giant Defy 5) so a bit worried, any thoughts or advice much appreciated!:D

    Thanks

Is there a screw missing in your 2nd photo? Definatey seems to be a bit of unusual wear in the photo .... I'd take it back to wherever you bought it and ask them to check it out!

    Thanks for the reply!

Yeah the screw is just missing in the photo, I was planning on bringing it back just wanted to get some ideas on what it might be first! The unusual wear your talking about, just around then dropout in the second photo?

The left dropout image shows marks where the skewer seats. The marks look fairly well defined suggesting the skewer is too tight. It should be stiff hand tight to close the qr lever.

The right dropout image shows that the skewer is not properly seated. It should sit fully in the dropout just like the left one. The marks are frame damage due to the skewer not sitting properly into the dropout. From the first image, it looks like the axle is correctly contacting the derailleur hanger but not the frame dropout.

I'd suggest you have it looked at by an independent bike shop first before going back to the original shop. It looks to me like the frame dropout doesn't match the derailleur hanger and the frame is damaged in consequence. That could be just due to camera angle but I don't think so.

Yeah I thought the derailleur hanger might have been an issue, it's definitely not flush with the dropout, like I said its my first bike so not fully sure about things like this! I'll make sure not to tighten the qr levers to tight though, thanks!

If the frame is damaged, is that a serious issue for repairs???

Going to take it to the local mechanic tomorrow morning to have a look too!!
