The only way you can have grass all year round is by closing ground in early autumn for deferred grazing - this will bring down stocking rate and grass production on the deferred paddocks - if you feed silage or other forage in winter (like myself) then the stocking rate can increase... I've joined 80 mature and 20 ewe lambs on 10 hectares (just coming to an end) - so I'll be around 9/10 per hectare next year. On 32h/80ac therefore mildly intensive rate you might stock 300+ ewes. I'm hitting my limit - in the absence of reseeding (which I'm planning) and more intensive fertilising - I think national ave. is 8 per hectare or thereabouts; but some intensive minded fellows north of 12 per hectare... Interesting experiments ongoing (well between 7am and 7pm anyways!) at Teagasc farm in Athenry - they having open day there next Wednesday 11 a.m.

Handy for myself just being 6 miles / 10k away (think metric!) - facilities wise I applied for and was grant-aided a mobile handling unit this year; I'd also recommend indoor lambing for your own comfort... I converted haysheds (sheep fence, 600 cable ties, windbreaker, 16ft gates, 408 stone etc.)

the cable ties made the fence tight; doubled up and laid old galvanis sheets on side to stop lambs feeling draft if I wasn't there...

flock lambs on their own 7pm-7am at Teagasc Athenry - they looking at different stocking rates and prolificacy rates (they started the Belclare breed).....
